Consumer Reports buyers say the thing is unreliable and you need to app to do much of anything with it. Also, you will need to use distilled water with it unless you like white dust.
e.g. "Bought two of these for my kids' rooms. The first poured water in the night out of the base and ruined my son's books on his bookcase. The second started acting up a week later, sending a message to our phones telling us that the tank is empty (even though it was full) and then turning itself off."

Evaporative types are much more trouble-free.
FYI, Levoit makes horrible air purifiers, too.
What's wrong with their air filters? The 400s and 600s are well reviewed.

By whom? Amazon reviews? 63% of all electronics Amazon reviews are fake according to a study.
CR: the $225 Levoit Pet Care Core P350-RAC gets a 52/100. 400s/600s are OK but far from the best in their price ranges. Levoit owner satisfaction gets a 3/5; Winex 4/5 and Blueair a perfect 5/5.

1) I did not mention Amazon reviews specifically and I do agree that everyone should be more mindful when shopping on Amazon and leverage tools like ReviewMeta and Fakespot. Reviews of products can come from more than just Amazon or CR - they are not the be-all and end-all for product reviews. I was recently shopping for an air purifier and after research, did purchase a 600s. I have only been running it for a day so I cannot provide a review myself, but here are some sources I used when it came to finding out which product I should go with:
I was deciding between it and the Blueair 211+, but went with the Levoit 600s since it was on sale for $260. I'm well within the return window and if I happen to run into the issues observed by the critical reviewers, I'm sure I'll return it and go with the Blueair.
2) All products will have critical reviews - not everyone is going to be happy with a product. Even discounting the "45%" of shill reviews - assuming they were all the 5 stars, so (2668*.85) * .55, that leaves ~1247 reviews that we could assume are by customers that felt the product warranted 5 stars. Reading through the critical reviews, we see that a lot of these are arbitrary things:
5 of the critical reviews are because the product was not new in box - valid concern/point but nothing to do with the actual review of the product
2 reviews complain about the app, which isn't critical to the function of the product (I acknowledge it is a part of why there is a premium for any smart product)
Almost the reviews referencing the fact that it "doesn't filter" doesn't specific what exactly they measured, if anything, to show that the product is not working. They don't even reference the measurements from the device itself.
Two reviews reference that they smoke cigars and expect this product to filter it out - I think this is an unfair assumption that any home usage air purifier can completely filter out any sort of cigar smell completely. There are six 5/4 star reviews that do reference cigars and they seem happy with the product.
A good number of these do reference that the fan eventually starts droning - this is something I will likely be wary of, although I don't know of any mechanical device that won't make noise or eventually make noise.
I was hoping to get actual feedback on what exactly you didn't like about Levoit air purifiers - your statement made it sound like you had a personal and subjective experience with them, but if you are simply going off the fact that CR didn't think they were a good value or that their Amazon shillscores aren't great, or that there are some critical reviews, maybe preface that versus a blanket FYI.
Just my two cents.
