Jeez this thread is grim. I just got back from 2 weeks in Taipei and had some of the best foods in my life. Ate at some Michelin breakfast spot for $6, Uber was under $10 a ride to get anywhere. The subway was easier to use than NYC. Exchanged $300 for food/drinks/exploring and it lasted me & wife the whole two weeks including drinking at bars every night. I even got new prescription eyeglasses at this place that did it all in 20 mins. Booked my own car with driver for 10 hours for $100 to visit the more rural areas, this was the highlight. Highly recommended!

i saw that. it was due to crosswinds. better safe than sorry.

it was overnight at narita airport. everyone affected got full refunds and were provided sleeping bags, water and snacks. i wouldn't mind spending the night at narita and getting ramen or bento box.

The direct delay was about 7 hours only, not days.
It's caused by strong cross wind. After a few failed landing attempts, the flight landed on the alternative airport. When it finally reached the destination airport, it's 7 hours late. No immigration staff was on duty at late night. No transfer flight could take off at late night. Therefore passengers were stranded in the airport until next morning.
Starlux is a new small airlines with few airplanes. The delay of the flight caused cascaded delays.

You can drink anywhere they dont care (ok maybe except like in the metro rails). Taxis are everywhere just wave and they stop. Starlux is a good airline for people that dont know it is pretty much the sister company of EVA air

What was the name of the Michelin spot? Also where did you go rurally that you'd recommend?

He's probably talking about Fuhang Soy Milk
https://www.taipeitravelgeek.com/fuhang-soy-milk

They offer both English and Chinese menus and it's a queue where you order, they put your food on a trey then you pay at the end.

I personally don't like the bread + "donut stick" together so I get like a #1 (soy milk), #41 (egg pancake) and #45 (chinese donut)

I think its fine. Not the greatest but it's good. It has a known reputation as having "surly" staff. At least comparatively to other Taiwanese spots. If you hold up the line they will yell at you to hurry up to. I got yelled at because they misheard what type of soy milk I wanted but they changed it when I caught the mistake.

If you want "rural" but you don't speak enough Mandarin and don't want to go too far from Taipei you pretty much can only go to Jiufen + Huotong Cat Village as its convenient to Taipei and you can hit both as a day trip.

Nicest ppl you'll ever meet. Extremely polite but hard to communicate with since it's hard to find any English speakers. Get cash. Can't stress it enough , get cash and exchange as soon as you get there. Best rates are at banks . Like most of Asia , extremely safe and very good inexpensive food. Food market , Michelin restaurants , Bobba places they are all amazing
Lots of historic artifacts to see. After all Taiwan has the biggest collection of historic Chinese artifacts in the world. Even more than China itself.

Sounds like some place I should consider moving to. I've been thinking about it, being single and all. Maybe 3 month trial.
if you're single, and don't mind the heat, Thailand is much better and even cheaper

Dude, how did $300 last you 2 weeks? Isn't Taipei is expensive especially bars every night? Are you sure you are not exaggerating?

I had been Taibei many times before pandemic, it is not cheap place than other south Asian destinations ( such as Bangkok, Manila etc.). $300 can last for two days if you live in less than two-star hotel

This is a pretty amazing deal, IMO. Very hard to find flights to Taiwan from the US under $1000 these days.

Wife and I just did a trip this April: https://turas.app/s/taiwan/0vylwa7K

Taiwan has such a great variety of activities, scenery, and food. Hiking, surfing, scuba diving -- tons of stuff that people don't associate with Taiwan. The southern part is amazing. The high speed rail (HSR) makes it really easy to get around the western part of Taiwan and the public transport system in general is really good especially in Taipei and Kaohsiung.

I'd personally avoid the summer months (June, July, August) as it is really hot and humid and more prone to typhoons. Spring and fall are perfect with Spring being comparable to the weather in SF.

How did you book a car with driver? Is there a company that provides this?
You can try Klook or KKDay app. They've got tons of private driver deals. I used it during my South Korea and taiwan trip this year and both were flawless. The drivers spoke pretty good English too.

Tip: Use the same apps to get a portable wifi egg. It was like $2-3 per day for unlimited 4g. Worked well in 99% of the places I visited and was good enough to upload/download pics while on the road until I got back to my hotel wifi. Pick up at the airport and drop them off at the airport too. Very convenient and dirt cheap.

Two days for $300? I was able to book a hotel next to ximending for $50 per night and eat Michelin rated food stalls at the night market for $2-4 each. The hotel was maybe 2-3* though so not really luxurious. Clean, safe, quiet and close to the subway.

Thanks for sharing this. This trip looks perfect for me and my family. I've never heard of Turas before but I love the way the app shows your itinerary and lets you copy it. This is exactly what I needed as I was thinking about my trip to Taiwan.
