Jeez this thread is grim. I just got back from 2 weeks in Taipei and had some of the best foods in my life. Ate at some Michelin breakfast spot for $6, Uber was under $10 a ride to get anywhere. The subway was easier to use than NYC. Exchanged $300 for food/drinks/exploring and it lasted me & wife the whole two weeks including drinking at bars every night. I even got new prescription eyeglasses at this place that did it all in 20 mins. Booked my own car with driver for 10 hours for $100 to visit the more rural areas, this was the highlight. Highly recommended!

i saw that. it was due to crosswinds. better safe than sorry.

it was overnight at narita airport. everyone affected got full refunds and were provided sleeping bags, water and snacks. i wouldn't mind spending the night at narita and getting ramen or bento box.

The direct delay was about 7 hours only, not days.
It's caused by strong cross wind. After a few failed landing attempts, the flight landed on the alternative airport. When it finally reached the destination airport, it's 7 hours late. No immigration staff was on duty at late night. No transfer flight could take off at late night. Therefore passengers were stranded in the airport until next morning.
Starlux is a new small airlines with few airplanes. The delay of the flight caused cascaded delays.

LOL at this "deal". I was flying there for under $600 in 2018.
I guess if we're considering deals, I used to fly direct to Taiwan for under $500 in 2012.

Can't believe you just put United and Eva in the same category. I flew United to Japan and it was no comparison to any of the Asian airlines I flew.
fun fact: both fly 777 from US to Taiwan. UAL flies SFO to TPE with a 3-4-3 configuration in economy. EVA flies LAX/SFO to TPE with a 3-3-3- configuration in economy.

I used to fly United to OZ when I lived there. Then flew Qantas, Air NZ, Cathay - that was a long time ago but at the time, they all put US airlines to shame. Then ended up using Emirates for a bit - another step up again.

oh 100%.

US carriers are always in a race for who can provide the least for the cheapest price.

its why this whole launch with Starlux was such a big deal, as they clearly wanted to provide better service as EVA/China Airlines for about the same price.

How did you book a car with driver? Is there a company that provides this?
like people said, there's apps for this.

you can also hire taxi drivers willing to take you places if you are brave.

or just use Uber, its actually slightly cheaper than calling cabs and you don't have to deal with language barriers.

Do I want to go to Taiwan? Yes. Am I flying something called Starlux airlines? No. Holding out for United or EVA
China airlines is where it's at, free all you can drink Taiwan beer.

Costco Citi Card, Amazon Prime Card... these have zero annual fees and no foreign transaction fees.
The travel credit cards show up on many sites as these sites get paid by many of these annual fee based cards.
They won't list other cards with no foreign transaction fees as they don't make money from them.
Forget about which CC has zero fx, the real reason you need cash in Taiwan is that most of the local (cheaper) places don't accept CC. So doesn't matter what CC you have when they only accept cash. This also applies to Japan and several other Asian countries. Sure, go to the more expensive restaurants but the night markets & local eating places are cash only. Your money will go 10X further if you stick with cash places.

Last month's news, hopefully it'll be more popular over time.

Merchants in Taiwan have become the first outside the USA to be able to accept in-store contactless payments on iPhones using Apple's Tap to Pay software point of sale (sPOS) feature.

once you arrive in Taiwan, go to one of the MRT (subway) stations and get a Yo-Yo card, deposit some money then you are one step closer to become a real Taiwanese.

You can use that card to take MRT, bus, train, and u-bike. Public transit in Taiwan is very cheap. A lot of stores (convenient stores, bubble tea, etc.) accept that card as well.

fwiw I was trying to use Apple pay last month and there are still some places where it's wonky and didn't work (KFC of all places lol) Ended up having to pay in cash, so still a good idea to have some cash on you!

Side note, the American Citi Costco Visa works at the Costcos there! (IIRC they don't accept any other CCs other than the co branded Costco card in taiwan)
