Model y 3rd row is a joke, good only if you want to torture someone.
Would there be any good reason to buy Model Y over M3 ?

Quote from Dr. J :
People should be really transparent about range. How often do you drive an EV from 100% to 0%? Basically never. In fact, you basically never charge it above 80-90% or so [mashable.com], even the Tesla Route Planner incorporates that into its calculations. You also never let it get below 10-20% or so [tesla.com]. Why? It's bad for the battery. Could you do it? Sure, but it's bad practice. Plus, if you run it too low, keep in mind the number on the screen is an *estimate* just like the range in an ICE is an estimate, and it's patently more difficult to refuel an EV on the side of the road than an ICE. That said, filling up an ICE and running it to 0 fuel isn't detrimental to the car. Imagine only filling an ICE to 75% and looking for gas at 25%, that's basically what the EV is like.
It's really not.

For one, the car this thread is about is fine to charge to 100% every day. Says so right in the manual.

For another, Tesla at least has a buffer below 0%, and routes you to any supercharger needed to reach your destination anyway before you get there- so you have to be a raging idiot to "run out of of charge" ever.

Also running an ICE to 0% is detrimental to the car in numerous ways so you're not even right about old tech, let alone new.

Quote from Dr. J :
So, for all intents and purposes, your REAL range when compared to an ICE is perhaps 60-70%.
It's deeply not.

Quote from Dr. J :
And the whole road trip and stopping? Please just own the fact that an EV takes long to "refuel" (just to use a term analogous to ICE) and stop making excuses. Yes everyone needs to stop and stretch, but not every hour or every 2 hours.
And you don't do that in an EV either.

I agree someone needs to own the facts but it ain't you LMAO

Unless you're driving triple digit speeds you're going to be stopping more like every 4-5 hours depending what model you're in.

And keep in mind all models are fine to charge to 100% for the occasional road trip-- you just don't do that in non-LFP ones for local driving daily.

So after say 250 miles of driving you stop for 10-15 minutes. Then you can drive another 250 miles.

15 minutes total stopping for 500 miles of travel.

How often do you drive more than 500 miles in a day?

For most folks is 0-1 times a year.

Quote from Dr. J :
Let's say we're taking a drive from NYC to Orlando. Tesla says that will take 20 hours in a M3 LR. 210 minutes of that, 3.5 hours, is simply charging, 6 stops
Yes- if you're doing the cannonball run and never stopping to sleep or anything.

A normal human would just plan to stop at a couple of hotels with EV chargers on the way and cut out like 2/3rds of that charging.

So again you're being.... a lot less than honest... in your presentation.

.Seems to be a trend.

Model 3 has no official tow rating, Model Y is 3500 lbs.

Y has more cargo space, a larger rear opening for cargo, and is slightly higher so slightly easier to get in/out of if your mobility is a bit limited.

If you don't care about those then get the 3.

My brother just bought a MY. Huge cargo area, a lot more passenger space and a tall opening hatch vs small opening trunk are primarily the reasons you would go MY over M3. Can't stand either vehicle personally, but his Model Y has a ton of cargo/passenger room and it is fast.

Does it make any sense to spend ~$10k extra for Model Y instead of M3? I have 2 kids, hence was considering the 3rd row and more space. However, I am not sure if there's enough room in the Y to make sense of that price difference. Also, I just don't like the exterior of Model Y. Any other main differences between M3 and Model Y?
We test drove both and definitely liked the spacious interior of Model Y more. We have two small kids. Seven seat option is a joke - it's incredibly cramped.

It's a 16 hour drive, how many hotels would you plan on stopping at to cut out a huge portion of that charging? I could see making a stop in NC if you're alone and the driving on to your destination the next day, but that's only one charge. If you're driving as a couple you can just drive 8 hours each and go straight through without stopping anywhere to sleep.

On one hand, WTF!!! I just bought on Monday and now $1,200 off just a few days later?! I was watching prices for two months and still missed it.

On the other hand, I would be thrilled to see the full tax credit available again on the non-Performance 3, but according to the IRS, the credit is still $3,750. See here [fueleconomy.gov]. This is current as of 6/1, so unless something changed since yesterday (and there is no news supporting this), it sounds like an error.
It changed the day after . I'm picking mine up tomorrow. This is out third Tesla. The biggest steal of any car anywhere. Mine is basically free as I save over $300a month on gas and I've never done any maintenance on my other two teslas woth a combined 120,000 miles. Just tires. That's it.

The 272 mile ranges gets to me. My 2023 hybrid gets almost 600 miles on 11 gallons. I would a Tesla but not for that range.
I am not a fan of TESLA but this type of comment just bugs the blinkers off me.
Who drives 272 Miles daily? What are you a trucker?
You might as well just say No HDMI, I'm out laugh out loud

This is a car, I've many ICE cars and like most jokers out there, as soon as the dial gets slightly below 50% I'm in the gas station as if tomorrow is the zombie apocalypse.
I've been doing this for a decade and zombie apocalypse still isn't here.

Almost every driver out there does less than 100Miles a day, with many buyers here barely commuting 50Miles a day. Unlike my ICE car that needs a gas station, you can charge an EV at home so this outrage about range is just PHONY.

Same thing even goes for the LR versions. How often do you drive that range? If you plan to drive that range daily, please consider a PJ. Otherwise do what every other reasonable person does and plan your trip with stops because people have been doing that with ICE forever.

Who drives 270 miles non-stop? That's at least 5 hours non-stop? I've been doing long trips for over a decade. It is so uncommon to drive 5hrs non-stop that if that is the issue to not buy an EV then please don't buy a ICE car either.

You forgot to mention the $1390 destination fee, $425 for wall connector, $230 for mobile charger, $250 non-refundable order fee.
lol and? This is under 30k in dollars from 2 years ago. This is my third one. Picking it up tomorrow . I've put over 120,000 miles on two of them over five years . NO maintenance. And at this price the gas savings MORE THAN COVERS the depreciation . Insane deal. Stupid deal. Paid $500 for my super charger at home and $350 to install it. Can sell ot to someone all day for $400.

The $7500 PLUS the $8k drop in MSRP PLUS the $2600 off for inventory makes this the absolute best car to purchase in the world hands-down not even close. I pay eight dollars to go 300 miles using electricity. At 30 miles a gallon that's $35 in fuel. Insane. Absolutely insane.

I've been answering these ignorant comments for at least five years. I've taken my Tesla's all over the United States, putting over 120,000 miles on them since 2018. I've spent no more than $40 total in maintenance plus the cost of regular tires. Windshield wiper fluid and windshield wipers. That's it. My performance model three, 300 miles on a charge, and took me 20 minutes to get an additional 180 miles. I'm sorry but after 300 miles I'm ready to get out and eat and stretch my legs . Supercharges are great and 99% of my charges are between the hours of 10pm and 6am for Pennies on the dollar. It's just ignorance, pure and simple. I don't spend any time at gas stations, when I used to spend about 10 minutes a week. That's 520 minutes a year. Now I use the supercharger about six times a year when I travel. It's nice waking up and having 300 miles of range every single day. Coming home with 250 miles of range. I charge it every other day And it takes about four seconds to plug it in. Also at this price it's absolutely ridiculous. Absolute best deal anywhere on earth for a new car that's priced at $32,000 after rebate. And inflation dollars. This would've been $27,000.02 years ago before inflation hit. we save over $400 a month on gas, a loan, which more than covers the depreciation, which makes us a free car. Not to mention the safest car on the planet. But I've been answering these ignorant comments for years and I just don't even care anymore.

Federal EV Tax Credit: The credit is non-refundable, meaning that you need to have income tax liability (owe money on your taxes) to receive value from it.

Quote from MurraytheDemonSkull :
Well, I would not argue if the new model to be released would be something from scratch. Usually in ICE cars drivetrain components are different in a new model and there could be unexpected issues along with the new design, however Tesla has been using the similar electric motor design and battery components in their vehicles, they update the motor design or battery from time to time but they do no release as a new model. In the new Model 3 most of the changes will be in the interior and exterior design to make more sporty, roomy and efficient to gain more range. I do not expect drastic changes in the drivetrain.
I for one care about the risk in changes to all the parts of the car, not just the drivetrain. Smilie But to each their own -- everyone has a different tolerance and appetite for risk and it's not a universal law.
