Tesla Model 3 RWD starts at $40,240 but is now eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit (income limits apply). Previously, it was only eligible for $3,750. This makes the starting price $32,740 after tax credit.

Deal is even sweeter if you live in a state with additional credits:

VT: $26,320
MA: $26,830
PA: $27,330
RI: $27,820
DE: $27,820
NY: $28,320
CA: $28,330
CO: $28,330
CT: $29,030
ME: $29,320

Full tax credit details below, but the following income limits apply:

$300,000 for married couples filing jointly
$225,000 for heads of households
$150,000 for all other filers

NO IT DOES NOT.

Withholding is totally irrelevant to qualifying for the credit.

If you're unclear on this go read a 1040.

The part where you compute tax liability is lines 16 through 24.

THAT is where the $7500 EV credit comes off.

Your withholdings aren't even looked at until after that on line 25+

This is also not correct.

The Child Tax Credit is worth a maximum of $2,000 per qualifying child. Up to $1,600 is refundable for the 2023 tax year.

Refundable credits are computed AFTER non-refundable ones-- so the CTC is only "worth" $400 off your tax burden for these purposes- the $1600 left is refundable.

Thus if you had say $7900 in tax burden and one CTC and one EV credit, your tax burden would go to $0 and you'd get a full refund of the $1600 refundable part of the CTC

I noticed they changed the language on the tax credit banner on the Tesla site. Bolded part is new:

Customers who take delivery of a qualified new Tesla and meet all federal requirements are eligible for a tax credit up to $7,500. Reductions likely after Dec 31.

Why would the tax credit be reduced after Dec 31st I wonder?

Need to buy a new car big enough for 2 large dogs. I'm a novice driver. Any suggestions? Is tesla a good car for a first time driver? I need one packed with safety features. Ideally thought about a toyota rav4 prime for the supposed tax credit or a highlander. I don't want to spend too much but I realize it's the worst years to buy.

The Tesla 3 is a pretty small car. Safety wise it is a good car. As long as driving an all electric car is not a problem for you.

Because you cannot claim the deduction until the year is over. so after December 31. too many people most likely wanted an immediate credit, so they had to add the disclaimer.

That doesn't really make sense to me, can you help me understand your point?

because the requirements for non-foreign-sources parts and batteries increases on Jan 1, and it's likely that at least the RWD Model 3 will no longer qualify since its batteries come from China.

It's possible the LR AWD Model 3 also won't.

If that's the case then the credit would drop to $3750 for those on Jan 1.

The Performance Model 3, and all versions of the Y, would likely still qualify for the full $7500 credit since they all use batteries produced in either California, Nevada, or Texas.

Great price for model 3. I owned a 2018 and flipped it for 2022 during crazy used prices times. It is a fantastic car and definitely paid way more in 2022. Check inventory model 3s to save extra 1-3k (that's what I see for Chicago search), Plus you can save extra $500 with referral (happy to refer) and 3 months FSD (it's not worth 15k…but it's free). The RWD after tax credit at 30k is great value especially if comparing for gas cars in that class. My previous 2018 rear wheel drive had no issues in Chicago snow. The upcoming facelift and interior change (highlander project) is coming which I suspect is causing some folks delay their purchase which is understandable. Although from what is shown from leaks doesn't seem huge besides ventilated seats (no issues with regular seats in Chicago but down south could be huge benefit).

I call BS on having no issues in Chicago snow with a RWD.

Why?

Folks drove fine on RWD in snow for most the entire history of cars existing, tires are vastly more important than drivetrain for snow driving, and traction control on a good EV is vastly better than on any gasoline car due to the nature of how precisely and rapidly you can control power to the drive wheels.

Well, your BS detector is wrong. I had my 2018 Long Range RWD for 3.5 years with no issues, never got stuck or had moderate/major slips on stock 18s all seasons. The car is heavy which helps and if you know how to drive in snow (lived here most of my life) you aren't going to have issues. My 2022 AWD Model 3 feels slightly more planted and controlled on turns in the snow but not ground breaking different (stock 18s with all seasons). Obviously if you get a performance, which comes with summer, that is a no go in Chicago winter. I made the mistake 20 years ago when I was a brand new driver with summer tires and snow and was slipping and sliding everywhere, quickly switched to all seasons.

Other rear wheel drive cars I had were RX-8 which was terrible because it was light weight and low to the ground would get stuck all the time and slip and BMW 5 series was alright but would slip/get stuck. A lot of it also depends on the tires. I preferred taking the 3 RWD out than our RAV4 AWD as long as not a lot of snow because it felt more sturdy and grounded because I had cheap old all season tires on my RAV4.

They don't do full refreshes. A few slight changes, but they've never done complete changes. 2019 to 2023. Have plenty of changes, but they change their cars every few months. You're not going to get a completely different model with any of their models.

No. Tesla is saying that maybe the $7500 will be less after this calendar year. It should not be. Tesla tends to say things to get you to buy their vehicles. I've owned three Tesla's, and I've seen things like this throughout the years. initially, back in February, or March, they were advertising that the credit might go away completely, and instead, it doubled on all of the model threes

Get the model Y. Under $40,000 with the tax rebate. You won't spend hardly anything on maintenance, and depending on how much you drive, the car may even be free. In other words, our last Tesla model three, the wife was saving $300 a month in gas. we were spending $400 a month on gas, and only $100 on electric. That savings, over three years, took care of all of the depreciation of the vehicle. The model Y right now is the lowest price it's ever been or ever will be. With inflation adjusted dollars, It's significantly less than any car in history with the same capabilities. Under $40,000 in 20 $23 for an SUV that requires very little maintenance and gets over 100 miles per gallon equivalent

With all the money you are saving, may be good idea to buy good keyboard (caps lock and certain keys are messed up on your existing keyboard).
And if keyboard is fine, may be time for English 101.

(Kidding over now).
