So the M1 Mac Mini could make sense for some users over the M2, if they don't do things graphic intensive. The M1 has full speed storage, while the M2 base version storage is half the speed of the M1. They switched to a single chip for the 256GB versus using two 128GB chips. Processor speed is in the 15% range faster. Graphics gets two more cores. $100 savings versus the M2 education or refurb $499 price. Tough call for me but I took the older M1 for the 20% savings. May be the right call for some users, but there is a summary on the $100 difference.

I know some people poopoo Macs for any number of reasons. I got a Mac mini m1 a bit after launch, used it for a year, them sold it and built a gaming desktop. I lost almost no money on resale. It's a slick little package. If you haven't played in the Mac ecosystem for a couple of decades, pick up a Mac mini and take it for a whirl. You might like it, and if you don't, sell it. Chalk it up to a few bucks on an interesting experience.

What are the downsides of plugging a USB-C ssd into the computer, vs having a TB built in?

Can you still back up your phone, or run VMs on the USB-C SSD?
By design, there is not much difference (if you spun $120 for a Thunderbolt dock and another $60 for a fast SSD). But there might be bugs that prevent it from working as designed.

Nice to see it but for any of us running Wi-Fi 6/6E probably not worth it.

wondering the same. Is there any benefit if just using the Mac mini for regular web browsing?

Tesla drivers are the douchiest, worse of the worst. They also park selfishly, and think they are cool, in a minimalistic POS.

Can you run any other OS on these? Seems like nice hardware, but not really invested in the apple echo system.
Linux Kernel 6.2 is native now as of Feb 2023.

All technologists are going to say future proofing but the reality is nothing is going to utilize that speed even if you have a device connected to it as it will still depend on whatever the rate limiting step is. You could have 3/4 of the computer have 10gbe speeds but if you have one 1/4 1gbe that will be your rate limiting step. The whole thing needs to 10gbe compatible for it to be worth it and they arent so its a waste. Same issue with tb4/usb4 with 40 gb/s speeds. Yea it's nice having the latest and greatest but nothing can utilize yet.

Is there an implication the vast majority of people live paycheck to paycheck because they have iPhone? That's absurd.

People live paycheck to paycheck because they are underpaid and they also have not been educated on how to properly budget.

Look at the facts. Most companies that are contributing to inflation are seeing increasing margins and have made statements that it will continue. Let's support workers that pay taxes and contribute to the economy vs companies that dodge taxes and/or buy political favors.

FWIW
A person's car is the number 1 area where they overspend and leads to financial hardship, not a phone or a computer.
Actually, it's extremely accurate, having an expensive plan and phone definitely contributes to the exact issue your trying to defend. Any finance/self help book or article you read defines that aspect, almost every time!

Underpaid? Why should a company pay more when they are the ones assuming the risk in every aspect. The employee does not assume this risk.

If you have a means to be online, you have all the resources to learn budgeting. Your playing the victim and blaming others over finding ways to change the circumstance instead.

I figured the number one place people overspend is on eating out ...considering all the poor people in cities don't even have a place to park a car 🤷
