That is how leather bands usually are. They need some break in time.

I'm interested in the watch and would like to know if the strap is junk.

This has a quartz movement so keeps accurate time. By comparison, automatic watches like the Seiko 5 can vary up to 10-15 seconds per day. The Eco-Drive is powered by light and when fully charged can run up to six months in darkness. The capacitor battery inside lasts up to 10+ years.

Most of the reviews compliment the leather strap. For example, "great color and texture" or "the brown band looks great". A couple reviews recommend using leather conditioner on it. I already have two Citizen Eco-Drives with nice leather straps, but one I swapped because it was an alligator style. Leather straps are so easy to change.

I bought the watch and returned it. The band is too stiff. I loved the face and in retrospect should have gotten a different strap.

My Eco-Drive is a little more than 10 years old. I inadvertently let the battery get to low charge and second hand would only move every 2 seconds. Via Citizen's web site, I contacted them and in the process on explaining that I should put the watch in sunlight for a few hours to recharge the battery, they also informed me that the battery might never need replacement (sounds hard to believe). Regardless, I have elsewhere seen that 20-years of service is not a rarity. All in all, I don't know where the truth lies, but I do know mine keeps excellent time & there is no expense/trouble in having a battery change every 1-2 years or so. Eco-Drive is a no-brainer.

I bought a Victorinox for ~$80 that has sapphire crystal. The listing says mineral, prod desc says sapphire, but my case back clearly says sapphire crystal

A solar-powered chronograph with sapphire is virtually impossible to find at this price. Here is a Tissot Swiss quartz on sale for 143.50. I have it in a different color and paid $100 more. It is noticeably bigger and not solar powered.
