Unless they accuse you of being an American Spy 🫢.
Unless you NEED to travel to china now, just wait until 2024 and it will be much easier.
Long layover for some dates, unfortunately.

Use Google Flights and check the calendar - departing IAD Sep 18, 20, 25, 25, then Oct 11, 18, 25
Two words of advice. One, bring your wallet. Dining / drinking out was super expensive there, at least in 2019. The Peking Duck and a few beers tallied with a 3-digit dollar amount. The level of luxury and pomp in the shopping malls is almost insane, think Las Vegas malls inside Cosmopolitan or Aria.
The other word of advice, be prepared to run a few snags that you wouldn't expect here. Like, having your passport scanned before entering Tiananmen Square. Having it scanned to buy a ticket for the Forbidden City. China very much likes to track your every step. Also be prepared to go to a convenience store and not being able to buy anything because there are no cashiers and you can only pay with WeChat (which requires a Chinese bank account). It doesn't happen everywhere but don't be surprised if it does happen.

It's above average by world standards, but you're not safer in China than in Japan or most of Northern Europe. And the idea that China is drug free is absolutely laughable.
