90% of us will have no issues traveling to China. Just remember, it's a foreign country with their own laws, your rights don't matter there and no such things as free speech so don't be stupid and don't do stupid things.

Pretty safe to travel in Beijing. Just stay away from politics I guess. The public transportation was top notch.

Unless they accuse you of being an American Spy 🫢.

Completely and utterly safe. Perhaps safest city of the size anywhere. Traveling thru Riyadh otoh, is not going to be fun, but interesting if that's your cup of tea.

Unless you NEED to travel to china now, just wait until 2024 and it will be much easier.
Why??

Dang, great deal. Was looking last week, and they were $1500+ at the minimum. Also can do one way for $493.

Long layover for some dates, unfortunately.
Agreed, great deal!

I can recommend the Grand Hyatt Beijing which is very walkable to many of the attractions, including Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Wanfujing.

Two words of advice. One, bring your wallet. Dining / drinking out was super expensive there, at least in 2019. The Peking Duck and a few beers tallied with a 3-digit dollar amount. The level of luxury and pomp in the shopping malls is almost insane, think Las Vegas malls inside Cosmopolitan or Aria.

The other word of advice, be prepared to run a few snags that you wouldn't expect here. Like, having your passport scanned before entering Tiananmen Square. Having it scanned to buy a ticket for the Forbidden City. China very much likes to track your every step. Also be prepared to go to a convenience store and not being able to buy anything because there are no cashiers and you can only pay with WeChat (which requires a Chinese bank account). It doesn't happen everywhere but don't be surprised if it does happen.

No, it's not.

It's above average by world standards, but you're not safer in China than in Japan or most of Northern Europe. And the idea that China is drug free is absolutely laughable.

Browsing through this post, and in response to some of the inquiries raised, going to Beijing for a vacation is a great idea. There are many delicacies, historical landmarks, amazing performances, and bars. You will also get the opportunity to meet new friends from different parts of the world. Traveling to Beijing is safe and the public transportation system is particularly well-developed. However, as someone from mainland China, I would like to advise that you not use professional and even seemingly professional photography equipment to capture any images in Beijing, especially at Tiananmen Square, and not just because you are not of Chinese descent.
