At this level, they all come from the same factories in China or Taiwan, so similar quality but the Canyons are cheaper because they are direct-to-consumer. However, you should know what you are doing if you're going to skip the bike shop.

Don't underestimate the value of a bike shop helping you choose the right bike for the riding you plan to do, getting the correct size, allowing you to test ride many options, building the bike, fine tuning the fit, providing free adjustments in the future, and handling any warranty claims for you.

How you ride and where you ride is the real question. Use the right tool for the job.

Apples and oranges when comparing mountain bikes vs a hybrid bike for mixed terrain with light front suspension. Is your main purpose to ride mountain bike trails? A person who wants to go on mountain bike trails should go for a mountain bike as a hybrid bike like this isn't really designed for that. A person shouldn't get a mountain bike if they really just ride around the town and barely touch gravel roads or dirt packed roads. Only the rider knows where he/she will be riding their bike. Both bikes are good specs for the price and this hybrid is a little bit better bang for the buck but the main question is "Are you looking for a hybrid bike or mountain bike?". If you say mountain bike, the choice is clear... If you say hybrid, the next question is "Are you looking a hybrid bike with thick tires and front suspension for mixed terrain or a hybrid road bike that is for the road and light weight & fast?".

it's all about the top tube length first for the right fit. Stand over is way down the bottom of importance. Most riders don't stand over with both feet flat on the ground. Don't forget to add shoe thickness.

Understood. Until now I've only bought used Trek, Giant or Specialized and did the maintenance myself. Need an additional bike and at $600 Canyon looks like a great deal. Thinking about it.

Speaking of used bikes, the bike shop brands are going to maintain more resale value than direct-to-consumer ones. Not only are they more well-known, but they are also presumed to be assembled and maintained better.

For example, I recently bought a relatively new off-brand hybrid. I knew the rear hub was gravely but figured I could just do a quick overhaul on it. Well, turns out the internal bearing races were pitted so the hub was shot and I had to relace the wheel with a new hub which is pretty dang expensive.

I don't blame the guy I bought it from, since he had no idea, but if it had been a bike shop built bike the tight hub would've been caught from the get go and never become a problem.

I'm over 6'3. Like others said, Canyon sizing is weird. They play it very conservatively on size to reduce returns/exchanges for those new to cycling. After all, it's a bit easier to fit onto a slightly too small bike than one too big. I also disagree with the recommended saddle height that their calculator spits out.

If you're my height or taller, do not go for Large.

For those who are actually right between sizes keep in mind that it's fairly easy to make a smaller frame fit bigger (raise seat, raise stem, longer stem..), but almost impossible to adjust a large frame smaller. I don't know anything about canyon sizing specifically.

I have this one but the 3.0 model and love it. Minor differences if you're not a true cyclist. If you're riding around town and for fun it's gonna be a solid bike.

If you are a proficient bike mechanic and know that the bike is a good fit (in both size and style), the Canyon is better. Otherwise, go Specialized.

The Canyon is a significantly better bike. The Specialized has a hi-ten steel fork (bottom of the barrel) and an 8-speed drivetrain including some Tourney components (again, bottom of the barrel stuff). The Pathlite gets you a more modern 1x12 groupset, Shimano brakes, and a name-brand suspension fork.

My advice: watch the "unboxing and assembly" video on the product page to get a sense of what it takes to put one of these together. Some folks may feel more comfortable taking it to a bike shop for assembly in which case you should add ~$100-$150 to the price of the Canyon. I think it's still a better value even at that price but YMMV.

Thanks and that's very helpful as i do not know much about bike. I bought a bike in Costco for my kid but the ride is very bad that is where i am hoping to get her a better one to ride. Mainly ride on the street and park.

Canyons sizing runs larger. You'll be better off with the M.
