I had a similar knife as my first knife as a kid. It's a slip joint and the detent is all that holds the blade open or closed, no lock, but that's not really as hazardous as many make it out to be. Scouts and outdoors folks young and hold have been using similar knives for generations. Just teach your kid no stabbing with the knife. And being made of 7Cr17 is a decent steel for this kind of budget folder, similar to 440A, it will be easy to sharpen and should have decent wear and corrosion resistance, with decent toughness.

Agreed. I remember that my grandfather, born 1906, carried a (US made) Shrade Old Timer in his pocket for all the years that I knew him. Thought this model was larger, but everything looked larger back when you were a kid.
