Just wanted to chime in and say I recently got a WD Dc Ultra star as a secondary HDD for my gaming computer in refurbished condition and it works. I also threw it under some testing just to make sure and everything seems to be in running shape.

Thanks. I pulled the trigger on an 18 Tb drive manufacturer refurb for $175. Came with 2 year warranty.

I tend to always go with the 5 year warranty on these. WD or Seagate. They almost never make it to EOL, so the warranty replacement is worth it IMHO

Serverpardeals will also do warranty replacement within 2 years. I have done once and the customer service is fantastic and professional. Really impressed.

I agree with you totally. In this X20 20TB model, there is no a gap($11.75 vs $14.5) that worth exploring between refurb and new. I brought HC530 14TB @ 132.41 which is $9.45/TB.

What causes drives for people to fail so frequently? What am I missing? I have multiple drives going on 10 years without failure. Are the drives that fail constantly reading/writing or something?

pls confirm ... for either seagate and/or WD

thru a manufacturer warranty claim, is the replacement drive new or refurbished?

i.e. if the drive fails within 2 years, doesn't mattered whether it was new or refurbished, the replacement is a refurbished drive.

Probably; it may vary. But either way, you get the 5 year warranty from the manufacturer not a third party.

It can be a variety of things. For one, people who have had failures complain more so there is some survivor bias there. But otherwise it's often abuse, vibration, temperature, shock.

I've had a few drive fail out of 100 ish and the biggest batch was the 3TB seagates from years ago (every one of 5 units died in a year). Beyond that maybe one or two failures.

All the rest outlived their use case (upgraded and decommissioned). That was often a 5yr or longer time span.

All my 3tb died... Haven't bought an odd number of tb since.

Ordered a 14tb back in march, failed less then 30 days in, now on a replacement for the original drive, and this one just started showing signs of failure, I have been just using the drive as a backup drive, they aren't connected to the machine much, only to backup my server, and with less then 2 hours of total use time since April when i get the replacement drive, this replacement drive has started to fail, can't access the drive, can't reformat the drive, surface test shows errors immediately, needless to say, I most likely will never order a refurbished drive again, I am a computer tech, and we build plenty of refurbished machines and I have used plenty of used hard drives at home for years without an issue, and I know they are refurbished drives, but I am not thrilled about having to send back another drive for them to test it and make sure im not lying just to send me another drive that hopefully last longer then the last 2.
