I think anyone can get the EDU (10% off) deal from Apple which makes this config $3,599. So unless there is a compelling reason to buy from Costco......

Honestly this...
I wish I had waited 5 months for the Mac Studio w/ M2 Max instead of the 16/256 Mac Mini. That 32GB of RAM + extra ports really would've done me good. I love my Mac Mini M2 Pro don't get me wrong, but boy am I pushing this thing to its limits. Lol

For $650 I could have gotten:

+2 more USB-C ports
better processor
much better gpu
+16GB RAM
+10gigabit ethernet
SD card reader

I think I still keep my M2Pro/16/512GB because the 32GB RAM of M2Ultra is not worth to spend $2300 more, I don't use the GPU much, so M2Pro GPU is enough, Handbrake can encode as fast as 12900K, my opinion.

I even wish I'd waited on my M2 Pro / 12-core / 2 TB / 32 GB Mini. You can get a similarly-configured Mac Studio with an M2 Max, more ports, support for more displays, and faster memory bandwidth for $100 less, not to mention the options for even more cores and memory... Seriously wish the rumors sites had gotten this one right -- they were expecting no Studio this year, maybe even a discontinuation.

Anyway, this isn't the worst deal if you're not going for an edu discount. 64 GB would be nice for me... 1 TB is a bit small, but you can get a lot more external storage for a lot less than what Apple charges for upgrades.

I was hoping they'd upgrade to the M2, so on Tuesday I ordered an M2 Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD for $2699 to replace my 6 year old iMac. I was trying to save some money with different MacBooks, iMacs and Mac Mini configurations, but I do a lot of video and image work, so I really look forward to this Mac Studio shipping in soon!

It is so aggravating, though, that we can no longer upgrade RAM or SSDs in these things anymore. I'm not a bigtime Apple fanboy but they work so well for what I do every day. I've used Macs for actually 40 years now (dating back to an Apple II in the early '80s), and they kill me with their ridiculous prices for RAM and HD space.

Anybody know what the biggest sale there every was (or even from Costco specifically) on a similar 2022 Ultra Studio? We should expect a similar deal on this beast within a year's time too.

In some sense, upgrading RAM for GPU is not trivial.

If you haven't dropped apple by now, I'm guessing you're in it for life.
The expandability of their products is head scratching to me. With how small NVMe are now, apple could easily integrate an opening likely did for the PS5 and allow some user customization without compromising their appearance.
But it's apple, you get what you get. You buy what they sell.
Thanks for supporting an American company at least everyone!

Yeah the Mac lineup and configurations become more and more anti-consumer every year. Unless you have to use MacOS, there are better performing Intel+Nvidia options, with the option to upgrade/customize and for cheaper. 1TB SSD and 64GB RAM on a $4000 computer is an absolute joke. You can get a 192GB DDR5 RAM kit for $600 and 4TB SSD for $200 if you go with a PC, pair it with a 13900k ($560) and 4090 ($1600).

Max Mini M2 Pro configures to 32GB Ram, 12 CORE CPU / 19 GPU and of course 512 GB standard SSD and can go higher.

I highly doubt you're doing anything to push that top of the line MAC Mini.

Yeah, I'm a pc, not a Mac, but I understand that I'm not the consumer for this hardware anyway. Just an interesting config, and at this price point you'd think the highly demanding clients would eventually get their way with Apple. But man, the fruit stands firm with denying the features people ask for until they really need a sales boom.

I use macs a lot. I also own a small amount of Apple shares. I am not, however, a fan boy. Apple is a company and I refuse to be fan of anything in general and of Apple specifically.

I completely agree that their memory is expensive. I also entirely understand why people may not want to buy Apple or spend the money on more memory because the upgrade is expensive.

That said, unified memory is not RAM. The same memory is used for CPU as for GPU and that's fundamentally different from a RAM/VRAM architecture. The RAM you get for cheap is not going to cut it even if it were feasible to use it.

I have a 256 GB HDD in my daily driver. I use it extensively. I use Dropbox where the system only syncs some folders. I have a 80+ GB free. I am ok with the current setup. Personally the $100/year is worth it to me because my system is always on wifi and I usually use the same folders. TBH small hard drive and large backup/sync is sufficient for many people provided you don't mind Dropbox and it's safety/privacy policies etc.

Remember, Mac Studio and Mac Pro don't take full advantage of the Apple Silicon compared to their mobile products. With these desktops, thermals and battery life are no longer relevant. So, compared to 2022 consumer CPUs from Intel and AMD, these are a wash. The GPU is on par with with a GeForce 4060. The Xeons, Threadrippers and EPYC CPUs blow these out of the water in the multithreaded department. The only thing these have going for them are the built-in accelerators but is it worth inability to upgrade? If you need a Mac, these are excellent machines. But the PC options offer a much better bang for the buck.
