A slightly better deal is buying 4 Platinum with S&S, unless you just don't like the Platinum smell.
It's like .10/fl oz vs. .11/fl oz. But it may save the headache.

Solid deal. Using Dawn is a great way to get rid of weeds instead of using chemicals. Ratio = 1 gallon white vinegar, 2 cups table or epsom salt, 1/4 cup Dawn, placed in pump sprayer and let it sit for 5 minutes. Spray the entire plant. Also works on poison ivy, but may need a couple of goes on it.

Is Dawn actually superior to other brands? Even with this it's still twice as much as say, Aldi's dish soap.
I think it depends what you're washing. If I'm cleaning my cats water dish a cheap brand is fine. If I'm trying to clean some heavy grime like dried/hardened cheese or something with lots of grease I find dawn to be superior and can use much less. You can tell some are more watered down as well just based on how quick they come out of the bottle (easy way to determine viscosity).
As long as you're conscious about how much you're using I think it's the better option in most situations. If you have your kids doing the dishes and they are wasteful maybe a cheaper option could be better.
If you have lots of time and don't mind shopping deals you can use a store like CVS much cheaper than retail if you sign up for emails and shop their deals. (Don't buy without using coupons/discounts and comparing to retail as their standard prices are higher and a bed deal.)
Dawn Ultra is known to be safe for a lot of surfaces. It's an allowed chemical in a lot of labs. Dawn Platinum is not the same product we know as "blue Dawn".
Just want to point out that Platinum is stronger as a dish washing soap but it may not be safe on everything that Ultra is.
For some reason it allowed me to buy the Don platinum for $1.59 without doing anything else I clicked on the coupon and then click the other offers next to the button and then just bought the Dawn platinum.

Consumer Reports rigorously tested[consumerreports.org] a range of brands and found no difference in performance between cheap and expensive ones. P&G's masterful marketing using oily ducks has convinced people otherwise, though. It should be a case study in marketing courses.

I'm kind of surprised because, obviously, some liquid soaps are more concentrated than others. I.e. adding water lowers the cost. Anecdotally, I need to use about twice as much Ajax compared to Dawn Platinum to wash the same amount of dishes. So, while the initial cost per ounce is lower, the actual cost is not. Also, with Ajax, I would need to fill my deck mounted soap dispenser (which is a pain) twice as often.
