Southwest thinks they are slick. I found a flight for $163 yesterday. Came back today and it was the same price but had the strike through saying I saved 40%. Not mad but kinda decieving.

Not sure why the dates are different, but on the Southwest site, it says:

*Use promo code 40OFF by 6/15/23 for travel on select flights between 8/15-12/14/23.

Agreed, promo code entry is 99% of the time on the payment screen. Why they chose to put it on the page when searching for a flight was a very poor choice.
How else would you see the fares as you shop? Makes 10x more sense to have it prior to loading results, especially since not all flights are eligible.

of course, SW doesn't list the "select flights"

Nothing but a waste of time

It's the airline industry rules. You're required to display in search results the fares and miles that the passengers will ultimately pay.

It's one of the few areas consumers actually have some protection from predatory practices.

This ain't Temu.

This was live last night. I rebooked an October reservation at literally lockdown pricing, freeing up enough points to book another trip in November that I thought I'd have to wait for my annual dump of points from my credit card renewal to cover.

Suggestion: change the FP icon to the regular Southwest logo lest people miss it. This sale is about as good as Southwest promos get. No gimmicks, no hoops, just excellent pricing on a relatively generous allotment flights that people actually fly.

How do I know 40% applied? Which days you guys seeing?
When you're on the page that lists the flights for a particularly itinerary, the discounted flights are clearly marked.

I don't know under what conditions the discounted pricing won't appear or the promo won't be applied. I didn't have to do anything other than log into my account.

In general:
A promo code is used to unlock an offer or promotion that is otherwise "hidden".
A coupon code is used to apply a discount to a product (similar to when you apply a coupon to something you buy at the store)

One has to be entered BEFORE buying (promo) and one has to be entered AS you're buying (coupon).

Also, while not 100% 1:1, promo codes are often used for service/intangibles whereas coupon codes are using for products/tangibles.

FYI - you can easily rebook your flights on Southwest and get refunded if the fare has dropped. Just look up your flight with the record locator and change to the same flights.

I just did exactly this to rebook family flights for a family of 4 and saved $300 worth of Southwest points.

It says "Most point transfers process by the next business day, but may take up to 7 business days." Not sure it's worth the risk.
For me, transferring to Southwest has been instant every time I've done it, which is probably a dozen. I've transferred to probably 4-5 different partners overall and the only one that took a few days was Air Canada. I'm not going to guarantee your same results, just my experience. Transferring the points to the travel partner is usually the way to go anyway, and book direct with the airline (or hotel)

Whoa.. I don't even know if the 40% off applied as the pricing was similar before and after applying the code, but I just booked FLL-RDU r/t for $119pp. That matches what we paid for Avelo with one shared checked bag and no carry-ons.

The date I want to book a flight for is within their blackout period. Should I still book and hope there's a future promo?

Thanks for sharing!

Why do you prefer transferring? I get an extra 25% value when booking through chase, so I've always done it that way.

Go to you existing flight and click on "Change". Choose the same (or different) times, and it will credit the difference.
But how do you add the '40OFF' code? I don't see a place to add it.

Log in to your account, start looking for a new booking on Southwest's front page in one tab with the 40OFF code. Then, open a new tab, go to My Account, and click "Change" for your existing flight. The promo should be applied (there will be a green banner at the top).
