Southwest thinks they are slick. I found a flight for $163 yesterday. Came back today and it was the same price but had the strike through saying I saved 40%. Not mad but kinda decieving.

Not sure why the dates are different, but on the Southwest site, it says:

*Use promo code 40OFF by 6/15/23 for travel on select flights between 8/15-12/14/23.

$198 RT to Hawaii from LA area. Nice. Plus you can take your camping gear.

The date I want to book a flight for is within their blackout period. Should I still book and hope there's a future promo?
Southwest creates these promo blocks as they see fit. If your flight is outside of this current promo block you can still book it but it may not be a "promotional price". There isn't a guarantee though that you flight will ever make it as part of a future promotion.

What you can do, and I tell people to do this all the time, is every week check your reservation by going to your account, finding your flight(s), and clicking "change". Go through and look to see if your flight's price has changed and if it is lower than when you booked it, they'll give you that money back in the form of a travel credit.

To give you an idea of how i've done this, I had a work trip to Vegas booked back in March and the fares were stupid high (~$780). I checked a week later and they had dropped to being $225 less than when I booked. I did the change/rebook option and got that money back as a travel credit that I can use for a future flight. You can do this on any SW booked flight and the price you see is the difference between what you paid and what it is now. If it is $+32 then you'll pay more than you did. But if it is ($100) then they'll credit you back.

SWEET! We have booked to go to Jamaica in October for a family of 4. This gave us a credit of almost $500 on our return trip only.

Man, tough crowd in here. I rarely book on Southwest, but after reading the main post, I selected some random dates and went straight to the checkout to try to apply the code..since, you know, that's what "Apply During Checkout" typically means. So maybe they should change the original post to avoid confusion. "Apply before Searching..."

I have two flight options out of 128 (one specific flight time, then wanna get away and wanna get away plus) on my two specific days that even get the discount, albeit a Friday departure and Sunday return.

Southwest is going to hell in a handbasket. Literally the only eligible flights on routes i fly are those with connections, nothing direct. Absolute joke ever since their December meltdown.

It's the airline industry rules. You're required to display in search results the fares and miles that the passengers will ultimately pay.

It's one of the few areas consumers actually have some protection from predatory practices.

This ain't Temu.
There's legislation now to free airlines from this, allowing them to post the base rate only so long as the customer can reasonably figure out what the all-inclusive total will be.

I can't reasonably object to this. Airlines are singled out for some reason, while hotels, car dealers, rental car agencies, etc. all get to post prices that you have no chance of paying for the goods or services they claim to be selling. Deep discount airlines are kind of getting around this by advertising torture-class pricing without disclosing what it cost to fly in reasonable comfort until just before you book, but that's a benefit unique to them that real airlines can't use.

I see the 40% off in the route options, but when I try to confirm an itinerary the 40% disappears and goes back to full price. Not sure what I am missing. Anyone else seeing this?

I cant find where the 40% is applying, can someone take a screenshot or something. If I add or take out the promo the prices are still the same.

Thanks for sharing!

Why do you prefer transferring? I get an extra 25% value when booking through chase, so I've always done it that way.
I just now did this. I preferred transferring because the same reservation was around 42,000 points booking through Chase versus 25,000 booking on Southwest using the 40% off code. Transferring points took only a few minutes to complete. The Chase booking agent said they cannot use the discount code available only on the Southwest website.

Damn! This has to be the first time a Southwest sale worked for me. Just booked flights to Vegas from upstate NY for less than $200 round trip. Haven't seen pricing (outside of the spirits of the world) since the 90's-2000's!

Lots of folks inexperienced with SW. Don't fret. This is easy. Go to the link below. It's a low fare calendar. That easy. Search. Book. Prices will reflect discount.

Oh, yeah. Totally makes sense with this promotion. I thought the other poster was saying they preferred transferring even without promotions.

if you want to change existing flight to try to apply the code , there is no option to apply the code.

I did it in the app. If your existing flight happens to be discounted, it will automatically show the new prices (with how much travel funds you'd get back) in the price with a note at the top saying the discount was already applied. There was no code for you to enter.

If the flight isn't discounted, nothing will show.
