I'll jump on the already way-too-long thread and say that I've standardized on these 18GB Exos drives from ServerFarts or whatever. I probably have 6 att his point. I've never had one fail, the packaging has always been good, etc, etc.

I'm running unraid and i do periodically get "UDMA Errors", but from what I can tell this may be cabling or other issues. It hasn't been enough of a factor to dissuade me from stocking up on these.

I like this vendor and this product quite a bit.

Been using my 12tb seagate from these guys as my 1 game drive, no issues. Only been 6 months, but so far so good. Also, yes, the packaging was better than Western Digital shipped my drive new. Oh, the irony.

As far as spinning rust goes, both the Seagate Exos and the WD Ultrastar have fairly similar performance. The only reason I'd recommend those, over lower end hard drives, is because of their faster (and louder) seeks. For gaming, an SSD is what's going to make a big difference, even a low end one.

Due to an incredibly stupid (IMO) change in the SATA spec, what used to be the 3.3V power pin has changed to be Power Disable, which tells the drive to power down. If you use a drive featuring Power Disable with a power supply that conforms to the old spec, the drive will not spin. You must take some measure to prevent power from reaching that pin.

There are three common methods of accomplishing this. One is simply to cut the 3.3V line to the SATA connector. Another is to use a Molex-to-SATA adapter. Many of the newer WD/Hitachi drives DO have this feature. With the WD Ultrastars, you can tell by the next-to-last digit of the model number. If it's a "0" it has the Power Disable feature. If it's an "L" (=Legacy) it does not have it. SPD also usually points out which drives do have it.

UDMA CRC errors are usually the result of a bad cable or SATA controller issue, not the drive itself.

Debating grabbing one of these for my new build. My old build has 4x 1TB WD Black drives. This would give me so much extra space and consolidate all those away. Primary drive will be a 2TB Samsung EVO 970 Pro NVMe.

Buyer beware on these drives a lot of the ones that are coming on the market refurbished we used for mining. You going to have a lot of drives coming in that are worn and busted that were stuck together with putty and glue. Don't put anything that you can't lose on these

That's what I'm think too but I plan to run them in nas ,shr/raid 1 but I do use the 3 2 1 backup method

Mine seems to be DOA....

Couldn't get it to pre-clear in UnRaid. Tried different slots in my 24-bay case, nada. A smaller 16TB toshiba that I got from Amazon is happily clearing away, regardless of the bay it's in.

submitted RMA. First try a a recertified drive. not so good of a start, for me.

No, just plopped it in in and UnRaid was the one that struggled with it. Didn't have another machine to test it on. I'm just asking for a refund.

Hmm. One warning from someone who hasnt used this seller or 4 pages of good experiences. HMMMM. Got two drives a few months back. Packed better than any new drives Ive gotten, low runtimes and work flawlessly.

At least have some semblance of an idea what you are talking about, please.

How loud are these compared to reds or ironwolfs? My server is in my living room and prefer limited noise levels.
