Today I was in a Costco in Central WA state and picked up the Northrock XC27 mountain bike marked down to $250.00. The store has 4 more on the floor.

It took me about 30 minutes to assemble it. So far I'm really impressed.

For more info on the bike, check Costco's website. Obviously I paid less in store.

Just a reminder that .00 prices at costco indicate a manager clearance price that only apply to that specific warehouse...

is this better than schwinn axxum? have one and want fork upgrade.

Keep the Axxum and buy a cheap Chinese air fork. This one only has 80mm travel.

I got this for $106. It was the last one and on display, so it was marked down. Super lucky… but it was too big for me so I flipped it on Facebook market for $200.

The person downvoting everyone recommending the newer Schwinn/Kents and GTs is deranged.

Why do they even make bikes with 3x7, 3x8 speeds, etc.? I am a bike noob and I just want the simpler the better. Give me the reliable Toyota Corolla with 1x7 and without a gazillion extra gears that are marginally 0.9% spaced apart, which I can't even use because you're not supposed to match 'big gear 1' with 'small gear 8' etc.

Seems cheaper for manufacturers to use simpler, less gears too. Why do all the cheap bikes with 21, 24spd and you need to spend more for less?

Why do they make 3x7 ? Because it gives you enough range using mass-produced, relatively cheap drivetrain components, including the 7 speed freewheel. 8-speed and more requires a HG type freehub body and the relevant more expensive to license and produce hubs.

The derailleurs and the shifters also need to be more precise and thus expensive to make to achieve reliable shifting between closer-packed cogs.

Trying to achieve a high gear ratio with just 7 speeds runs into issues as there are no mass-produced cheap freehubs that do that + the existing derailleurs do not exceed the capacity of teeth for what's already available = they would need to invest in designing and mass-producing these parts themselves.

And it all adds up to a package that is not as affordable, or that is going to be worse than going with a tried and true 3x7 that is virtually unchanged from the MTB i was riding in the early 90s. If it works, don't fix it.

Doubt they make many 3x8...I'd think most if not all 8 speeds are 2x8.

The vast majority of buyers will not care the "how" or "why"...
They will see "21 speeds", they will see $250-300 or whatever, they will feel warm inside because they as smart and always buy smart unlike those "idiots" that bought 10 or 12 speeds for 5* as much, and just buy their bike to be done with. Quite a few will ride it forever without even oiling their chain. I meet them and help them with mechanicals almost every week. Still, good for them for getting their butts outside.
