This is a Chinese made set. Dont expect it to stay as sharp as long as the US made knives. Make sure whoever you're buying this for wants it. I have 3 walmart christmas sets in one of my dresser drawers that ive been given over the years. I inherited all of my dads old buck knives that should last my lifetime. Not sure why people think I need more knives. lol

Unrelated, but: any tips for someone trying to get better at actual sharpening? I have stones of the necessary grit, have practiced on some lower quality knives with different edge angles (not sure if that's the correct terminology), and have watched multiple tutorials.

Still, can't get them to their original sharpness. I consider myself reasonably handy but can't really figure out a way to get this right.
Reality = Most people making videos on how to sharpen knives aren't teaching correctly. Knives cut with little micro teeth. More times than not, you need to "hone" your knife rather than "sharpen." When you hone, you are taking a blade that is already sharp and realigning/polishing those micro teeth. So really what you need to do is "strop" it. Grab a leather strop with some stropping compound, and strop it until your apex is restore. Additionally, you will get more longevity out of your knife by sharpening it less and you don't really need to make it as sharp as possible. If you do this, you will wear down the blade quicker. When you can no longer hone your blade, that is when you go back to sharpening it.

Yeah, as several other people have too. It's been known for a while. A good test is their flip knives. Get both as sharp as you can get them. Make around 10 long cuts in cardboard. Notice the U.S. steel one, you can still lightly run the blade along your arm and shave your hairs off. Then try it with the chinese version. Luckily Buck has been scaling back on their Chinese production. The build quality seems fine from the Chinese market, as I havent seen any with the rivets/pins popping out, or just completely falling apart as other cheap branded knives do. They did have a defect with the belt clips on their knives years ago, but they fixed that. (Personally I dont buy any of the knives with a belt clip). It's just the quality of the steel/blade that's the issue. I bet if they imported quality US or German steel for their Chinese produced knives, then the comparison would be less noticeable.

Not bad if you want a decent cheap knife but this isn't US made which aside from craftsmanship, you can never trust the materials that were used to make the knife either. That's something to think about - this is a classic case of selling the brand name and not the product. I'd rather put my 13 bucks towards a classic 110/112 or some other model. Since I already have a dozen of those...probably not lol. The other thought is for 13 bucks I want to get it just to look at it, that's less than shipping from a lot of sites. Anyway not a bad deal, just don't 'need' it right now.

This is nice set if you capitalize on free shipping. Makes for a great gift for groomsmen.
At least get a budget USA buck as a groomsmen gift, not this cheapo junk.
