I bought this phone from Walmart late last year for ~$100. I activated it on Total's cheapest plan and didn't replenish after the first 30 days were up. Turned it off at that point and when I turned it back on about 30 days later (a little over 60 days from activation) it was unlocked.
You only need to pay one month. After the month expires you will have already activated the phone and after 60 days the phone will unlock.
Have bought two XR, one iPhone 11 in the past year with Total Wireless and Straight Talk. Latest was a used 11 bought in January this year, unlocked after one month payment and 60-days.

There are occasionally issues with unlocking.

Message 611611 with UNLOCK and you get automated response when device will be unlocked. Device needs to be activated first for 60-day counter.

I got the phone from Walmart, activated Walmart Family Plan for 1 month and then kept it in drawer. It is exactly 2 months since I activated and when I turn on my phone I still see it as SIM locked. I am going to keep it on and see if it changes after few hours.
What monthly plan did you get with it? Wondering if it would work with the $24.88 one. Thanks

Yeah, I got 24.88 plan and it worked. BTW, I saw few other cheaper options posted by others in the thread. So that could be an option too.

I just did the Tracfone method on my Straight Talk variant only paid $11.64

Quote :
How to activate it with $10 from tracfone website:

1. Go https://www.tracfone.com/home, click "Activate"
2. Choose "New Phone"
3. Choose "I want a new number"
4. Choose "I want to use the physical SIM card"
5. Input device IMEI
6. There are lots of service plan, there is one plan which is $15/month for unlimited talk and text, if you enable auto pay, it will give a $5 discount and then the total would be $10, you have to register a tracfone account to take this advantage.
7. Auto pay can be disabled from tracfone website or mobile app to avoid the second month charge.

I have turned on the new iphone without inserting /activating sim card. It says carrier restricted in settings. Now if I activate the phone with total by verizon, will it unlock the device after 60 days? Have I done mistake by turning on the phone without sim card activation?

I always use new phones without sim for a day or two to update & make sure it's working correctly. Unlock clock only starts when you activate sim. You're OK.

Yeah, you'll just need to call in to get it going. Some have run into that issue with activation on some batches of phones lately. Just make sure to say that it's a brand new phone so that they hopefully set it up that way. Some reps seem to set them up as a BYOD phone, which can mess up the auto unlock, requiring another call after 60 days.

From what I'm seeing online, it only unlocks after 60 days if activated through verizon while the walmart plan won't unlock for 12 months.. hope that's outdated or incorrect though as I want to get this..
I confirmed with Walmart support that it takes 12 months plan. Verizon support confirmed the phone gets unlocked after 2 months/60 days.

Walmart has no clue.
Verizon is current owner of all Tracfone brands. They're the authority on unlocking of their locked branded phones.

Once you have the plan you text unlock to 611 or whatever and it gives you date when device will unlock which is after 60days

I bought iphone SE for total from target and activated it with total by verizon on oct 9. Now total by verizon say the phone was registered as BYOP. That means the phone is not from them so it can't be unlocked in their end. What to do?

Just give the Total unlock dept a call after 60 days (a couple days after is usually best because they may tell you to wait for it otherwise) and explain that it was a new phone and is supposed to be unlocked. It shouldn't be a problem, although you occasionally have to call a couple of times to get someone who knows what they're doing.
