But unfortunately I haven't seen 576 zones on a 4K monitor, so I can't say whether the extra pixel density makes the lack of another 500+ zones show.
From what I've seen on YouTube of the INNOCN 32M2V 4K that only has 576 zones and is a larger panel, that also seemed to handle most content with no noticeable blooming, so I'd say the GP27U and this Acer are probably still viable alternatives to the 27M2V.
The 27M2V got a good review from RTINGS but the one thing that concerned me about it is at 60hz the input lag shoots up to 25ms+ due to frame doubling that I don't think can be disabled in the OSD.
I had a $50 gift card so I went ahead and bought one. I'm curious to see how it is.
Out of the box initial impressions are not good. It supposedly comes factory "calibrated" to 7500K according to an included printout... which you would think would be far too cool/blue, but mine is way too red.
From first glance it doesn't seem VESA compatible despite Acer specs claiming 75x75. I'll have to look into this further, but the stock stand mount is small and round.
So even if it is VESA compatible it's going to be very awkward with square 100x100 brackets, and will probably require specialized screws.
Getting around the OSD is one of the worst experiences of any monitor I've ever used. The buttons are awful, stiff, not responsive to spamming.
So going from a level 50 to 100 adjustment or vice versa takes a very long time, and hurts the hand and arm.
The OSD options are also not intuitive at all. Local Dimming has options for "low" "average" and "fast". You would think fast would be the optimal setting, but that results in extremely obvious blooming. Low is the best setting with acceptable levels of blooming.
HDR locks all picture adjustments. 95% of the time it even locks brightness at full, but sometimes I randomly seem able to change brightness when set to HDR. I'm using the monitor currently in SDR because HDR results in WAY too much red oversaturation.
I have it side by side with a Samsung G8 OLED and it's so skewed to a red hue that I can't stand to use HDR at all. So for a monitor whose entire gimmick is supposed to be a high brightness HDR experience, I consider it to be completely unusable in that mode.
If all adjustments didn't get locked out when in HDR, I could tone the red hue/saturation down to a more accurate level, but at the moment this is not possible.
Which brings me to the final point, I see no option in the OSD that would indicate any kind of ability to update the firmware. So there's a high likelihood that all of the aforementioned issues will never be remedied.
For anyone curious, there doesn't seem to be any KVM related options in the OSD either, but that's not something I really looked into deeply as I probably wouldn't ever use it. But when I have more time I'll examine USB-C power delivery and KVM possibilities.
At the moment it's seeming like I'll be returning it, still need a little more time to evaluate it.
Right now its only positive for me is sharpness. It's my first 4K monitor coming from 1440P, and next to a G8 OLED at 3440x1440, there is slightly more detail in certain 4K scenes. But this is probably true of any 4K monitor, so not exactly a big win for the Acer in my opinion.
However, in HDR the Samsung OLED matches it in brightness overall, but the whites are far superior, and much brighter on the OLED, which is surprising considering bright whites are supposed to be a weakness of OLED. And again, HDR is completely broken on the Acer anyways.
I think this is launching at $599 for a reason.
EDIT: So using the Nvidia control panel and the Windows HDR calibration app I was able to tone the red oversaturation down to an acceptable level.
With these changes it holds up well against the OLED in many HDR scenes, white on black is still a weakness. The OLED is far superior with any small white highlights on black. Youtube control bar, game intro screens and menus, etc.
But the Acer mini LED does beat it in full field white brightness.
The problem with this software workaround is it only applies to PC as a source. If your source is an Amazon/Apple streaming device, a console, whatever, you're still going to have the HDR breaking red saturation issues.
Viewing angles are pretty bad, though. For whatever reason, FALD mini LED monitors seem to all suffer from poor viewing angles. The OLED is crazy with off axis viewing, like no difference at all from on center. If you're the type to walk around the room while a video is playing, or plan to share your screen at all, definitely stick with normal backlit IPS or go OLED.
90W power delivery is actually advertised, but I still need to hook up my laptop to verify.
If this monitor didn't lock adjustments in HDR, was firmware updateable, and had joystick or external puck controls it'd be a keeper.
If you're after a good HDR monitor with FALD you're probably just better off spending the extra 100 on the Innocn 27M2V.
