Can someone quickly explain the limitations of transcoding. I gather direct play on AMD platform through PC/Mac plex is fine right? The HDR/DV and tone mapping all works fine?

Just need RAID And 1:1 pairing.

Thanks!

With direct play the file isn't touched so you should be fine, and as far as I understand about the tone mapping all you have to do is being running some type of Linux for it to work.

I'm looking for one to back up family photos and videos. Something with good redundancy, and maybe even pcloud back up capabilities. Would this be overkill?

They have a smaller model on sale if you just need the basics: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...s220j.html
You can set up the 2 drives for redundancy.

Second this. I use a DS218+ for myself at home and it gets the job done for my backup needs.

I have this model primarily for my Plex server and it's been fantastic. It does transcode 1080p decently, but don't even think about 4k. I've actually set up two libraries now, one for original copies and then a lower quality 1080p file (usually around 1 gig in size) that I use to stream to tablets or other mobile devices. This also helps BIG TIME when downloading. It always transcodes when downloading on my iPad and took forever for 1 movie. Now I can download a movie in about 30 seconds with the smaller files from my second library.

No issues at all with home streaming 1080p and 4k content with this device. HDR is perfect for the 4k content.

You should be able to by using Home Assistant and Frigate directly on this device, but YMMV on how many cameras it will support. I have a separate (beefier) machine that actually runs the software and just uses this as an NFS-mounted volume to record the data to.

Synology offers Surveillance Station. You have to buy licenses for each camera, but I think you get a free license for the first camera. I tested it out with an Amcrest camera on my 918+, and it worked fine.

I use a DS1520+ with about 6 IP cameras (really 5, but one of them is dual lens) while running a Plex Server, docker, downloads, backup, and various other server needs.

Loving my Synology as I'm constantly coming up with new use cases for it. Just wish my 1520+ had 10 Gbe which this one has the option for it, but loses transcode due to the Ryzen vs. Intel architecture.

This DS1621 has a PCI-E upgrade slot (for 10gb nic if you already have them).

I'm strongly considering returning the ds1522 I got on amazon warehouse for $550 to get this one for the extra drive bay, 2 more cores and ability to re-use my intel 10gb nic for a bit more... but then again this is for upgrading my DS220+ which has been working fine for my purposes but Synology software is really good.

get the ds220+ has intel cpu for transcoding. 2 bays, has synology drive and photos. Which is what i use it for... plus some docker containers.

The bad thing is that it doesn't have 2.5gb network or 10g network upgrade option

I have a now-pretty-old 4-bay Synology that I'm very happy with, but it's getting old, showing limitations, and I'm starting to get concerned that the Synology itself would fail and contemplating a migration.

Anybody in a similar boat who evaluated unraid vs.moving to something like a new model Synology who can describe how you evaluated this and what you wound up doing/
