There's a reason they let 9th graders use these in school shop classes. If you can't apply a little common sense, you really shouldn't be a weekend warrior

Helpful info from HD review: "This is an 8" SWING drill press. The 8" swing means that it can drill a hole at the center of an 8 inch circular material or 2X the clear throat depth of 4" – the distance between the face of the support column to the center of the chuck."

Stick with a 12v or under cordless drill if you weren't raised with a handyman in your life.

It earned a permanent place on my small workbench. I've mostly used it for drilling small, well clamped, pieces. I 'turned' a few small custom dowels on it too. Not had an issue with it in the past six years and the drive belt looks in great shape.
That is a note, to change the rpm means to change the drive belt to a different sized pully on the stack. It's not hard at all, but it's not as simple as a electrical switch. Nonetheless, it means there are fewer parts to break.
.
Looking at the guides, aluminum 6061 shows a hardness of 95 HB with a feed rate and rpm in range of this drill press.
A standard twist drill bit with 135-degree split angle tungsten carbide should work. I've not had the need to drill this stock, but in general slow, clearing the hole as you go with wet lubrication such as 3-in-one or WD40 even, should not be much issue.

With whatever tool you're using you really just need to understand the safety considerations for that specific tool.
