wow, really. Seen a lot more people hurt them self slipping with portable power tools.
There's a reason they let 9th graders use these in school shop classes. If you can't apply a little common sense, you really shouldn't be a weekend warrior

A vyse is your friend. Use a vice or c clamps to keep things in place. And use really good drill bits.

I have the equivalent HF version of this, which looks to have come from the same factory. It the Wen wasn't painted orange not sure I could tell them apart. Maybe the Wen uses better motors and parts, but I have not been impressed by my HF version which suffers from lack of power and excessive spindle wobble. It gets the job done, eventually, and for the $100 it cost I got what I paid for.

Good price. Reviews indicate this is decent for at home diy projects. One person had real trouble drilling in to a piece of 3/8" 6061 aluminum.

Helpful info from HD review: "This is an 8" SWING drill press. The 8" swing means that it can drill a hole at the center of an 8 inch circular material or 2X the clear throat depth of 4" – the distance between the face of the support column to the center of the chuck."

A drill press for MOST people can be a dangerous thing versus a cordless drill. A drill press does not play - if it binds up, it will spin the work piece. If you are not careful and do something stupid like have long hair or loose clothing and lean into it, you're going to get hurt.

Stick with a 12v or under cordless drill if you weren't raised with a handyman in your life.

Textbook case of availability bias. Many more are using portable drills than drill presses. You would have a case if you knew how many of the people using drill presses hurt themselves, but these numbers are too small to make it to news.

I've been using the 2016 version of this drill press for my business since 2019, and have never had an issue. I paid $90 for it back then, so this is a great deal.

I got this for $36.40 during the famous May 2017 Walmart price-mishap morning.

It earned a permanent place on my small workbench. I've mostly used it for drilling small, well clamped, pieces. I 'turned' a few small custom dowels on it too. Not had an issue with it in the past six years and the drive belt looks in great shape.

That is a note, to change the rpm means to change the drive belt to a different sized pully on the stack. It's not hard at all, but it's not as simple as a electrical switch. Nonetheless, it means there are fewer parts to break.

.

Looking at the guides, aluminum 6061 shows a hardness of 95 HB with a feed rate and rpm in range of this drill press.

A standard twist drill bit with 135-degree split angle tungsten carbide should work. I've not had the need to drill this stock, but in general slow, clearing the hole as you go with wet lubrication such as 3-in-one or WD40 even, should not be much issue.

Sounds like user error

This seems a bit like comparing a jig saw and a table saw. A drill press and 12v drill both drill holes, sure, but some work really needs a drill press, whether it's an 8" bench top or a floor standing model. Conversely, trying to drill a hole in a wall with a drill press is probably not going to work out so well.
With whatever tool you're using you really just need to understand the safety considerations for that specific tool.

I bought the HF one then returned and got the grizzly G0925 for $100. HF one is flimsy to me, has a light but I think it's useless. Grizzly one is a bit heavier, better finishing parts, has key lock holder and the guard. Both have same power I believe. debated between Wen and Grizzly. I would buy wen if it was on sale
