All storage media is dropping, along with lots of tech. COVID bubble is over.

My guess is that greater density per M.2 drive is coming. Four TB in a single M.2 is available and economical. Eight TB is available but pricey.

I'd like to see 8TB MLC for $100. Maybe next year.

The underlying NAND flash memory that makes up the bulk of the cost of these things has dropped significantly in price in the last year. NAND trades as something of a commodity and as such, is highly dependent on supply and demand for pricing. Prices were artificially high during COVID as companies and individuals raced to buy computer equipment, but now demand is artificially low as everyone is oversupplied and the manufacturers are building up too much inventory. In the long run, price per GB decreases, but in the short term, there are fluctuations like this.

The 980 Pro has been due for a lower price like this for a long time. This is a great Gen4 SSD, but Gen5 SSDs are starting to be sold, so this is no longer top-tier. I have a 980 Pro (500 GB) and a Intel 670p (2 TB) in my computer right now. I bought the 980 Pro first and paid $80 and then bought the 670p a month ago and paid $73. If I was looking for my first SSD now, I'd choose the 670p as the performance difference will only be noticeable for a small percentage of users.

Hmm I bought this without heatsink off Amazon the other day and it's on sale there (without heatsink) for 59.99
Hopefully it doesn't get too hot without it....

Basic economics: "Samsung forecasts a shocking 96 percent drop in profits for Q1 2023."

Tons of chips made and lower demand. Samsung is the world's biggest memory chip maker.

I should've waited a month on that new SSD upgrade 🤦🏻 ♂️
