Here's an even better value if you don't need N. America roaming: https://slickdeals.net/f/16749188

For those who's on this plan, do I still have to use the app to text and call?

Got it! Thanks for the explanation.
https://www.target.com/p/freedom-...A-88685142

i have a bunch of phones running on the old Walmart Freedompop GSM sims which are 300 min/1000 texts/100mb. But I might get a couple of these just to give them a try.

https://www.reddit.com/r/freedomp...at_target/

at least 1 person claims that they were switched to a $12/month plan:
"I just got this activated on the free plan and immediately got upgraded to the 1GB plan and charged $12. Definitely too good to be true and an absolute scam. I'd avoid FP at this point."

This seems to be very new and I don't think that it's been verified that they don't do the auto top off charge if you use all your data. I find just turning the mobile data on my GSM plan will burn through that 100mb immediately, but at least that's verified to just stop working and doesn't charge.

If you look at Targets web page you will see this:

Get 100% Free Talk, Text, and Data on FreedomPop's Nationwide GSMA network — compatible with GSM unlocked phones (including unlocked phones from AT&T, T-Mobile, Metro PCS, Cricket Wireless, and other GSM carriers). FreedomPop offers a 100 minute, 100 text message, and 100 MB high-speed data plan for $0.00 per month + taxes and fees. If you qualify for the ACP program (sponsored by the FCC) you'll get unlimited calling, unlimited text, and 10GBs of high-speed data from FreedomPop. Apply today!
I saw that at Target, but when I go to FreedomPop's Web site, they don't have a free plan with 100 minutes talk/100 texts/100 MB high speed data. The only free plan that they show if you don't qualify for ACP is their "Freemium" plan for 10 minutes talk, 10 texts, and 25 MB data which isn't very useful. Has anyone purchased the Target SIM recently and successfully gotten the 100 minutes/100 texts/100 MB data plan?

So I see how the promotion is confusing.

The promotion is that for the first 3 months, you can be on ANY plan (3 months, 6 months, or 12 months) and get the $15 price point. After those 3 months, you MUST move to a 12 month plan to keep the $15 price.
Where do you see that you can move to the unlimited plan for $15 for paying for 12 months after the 3 months? I only see the cheapest plan for that.

Just picked up and activated a Target SIM on Monday.

I took screenshots during the activation in case there were any SNAFUs.

Turned out, there was. Upon activation, my account stated an "initial refill" was needed, because somehow the plan had changed to the $10 one. Again, I had screenshots, so I know I didn't select the wrong plan. Anyhow, their chat agents were actually really helpful and after a bit of back and forth they were able to get me on the free plan as intended.

No issues since then. I also have a line on the same account with the old GSMT Walmart free plan.

Unlike the Walmart plan though, the new line states that you must manually renew every month. I saw a Reddit post that claimed otherwise, so I guess we'll see.

Thank you for the additional info. It turns out that the nearest Target that has these SIMs available is inconvenient for me to get to. I was going to make the trip anyway but now it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth.

Don't even bother with this. TextNow is a joke.

I ordered a SIM card and tried to set it up today. Trying to add a data subscription was so frustrating that I've decided it's not worth it.

Immediately after ordering the SIM card with PayPal, I canceled the PayPal billing agreement as I routinely do with all PayPal billing agreements that get created when I order things. However, that billing agreement was automatically associated with my TextNow account and can't be changed to a new one, ever. Their customer support told me I would have to create a new account to set up a new PayPal billing agreement, and they would have to transfer my number and SIM card to the new account manually. By the time I got the new account set up, their support was closed for the day.

I also noticed the account management area of their site is lacking in functionality and hard to navigate. Their email verification functionality doesn't even seem to work because the email never comes through. I tried resending it several times to multiple email addresses with no luck. I'm not sure what limitations or problems I might run into with an unverified email address.

I'm also already getting annoying notifications through their app wanting me to buy add-ons.

With all the jankiness and annoyances I've run into so far, I've decided to just write the $4.99 I wasted on the SIM card off and find a better prepaid service.

Also, be sure to look at their Unlimited 2G Data Fair Use Policy [textnow.com] if unlimited 2G throttled data is a selling point for you. The policy states:

Quote :
Data usage suspension may be placed on a user if (i) the user's data usage has been throttled within the applicable monthly cycle and user has used more than 170 megabytes (MB) of data per day for three days in a row, (ii) a user has exceeded their monthly data allotment and has used more than 1 gigabyte (GB) of data within a five day period, or (iii) a user has exceed their monthly data allotment by ten times their monthly plan limit.

i have a locked MetroPCS phone and I'd love to be able to use this plan on that phone. Any thoughts on whether or not a locked MetroPCS phone would work?
Just try it out. The SIM costs next to nothing. My T-Mobile phone is 100% locked and it still works.

You'll never come close to it anyway. Nothing loads with 2G speeds except a periodic Gooogle search result. 5kb/s speeds that 2G brings isn't going to do much. It's probably only there to ping the tower every now and then to let TextNow know it's still an active SIM.

This is incorrect. Months 4 to 15 will be billed at once at the conclusion of month 3 @ a $30/mo rate.

That's a good rate. Is that paid upfront yearly?
