You can refund the executive membership less the 2% cash back certificate at the end of each year if you don't spend enough so there's no real gamble other than waiting in line and having them issue a refund once a year if you don't hit the profit threshold.

I have never had a company turn me off from loving them to hating them so fast as Costco has in the last week. They are harassing everyone in line to show their cards and add their photos to them, even a little 80 year old lady. The employees at two different Costcos this week have also been very rude which is unusual for them. I suspect this coupon coming out during their time of harassment is no coincidence. I have never not used one of these when it has come out but this time I don't think I will, I just don't feel good about spending money with them anymore. I stopped spending money with Sam's awhile ago because I think their policies border on harassment, scanning every item in your cart when you leave like you are some damn criminal, looks like Costco hired some idiots from Sam's.
I think Costco is taking a page from Netflix's book. Card sharing is going to be a thing of the past. They probably thought: "Netflix was successful, why not try here?"

Had personnel ask to see my membership last two times I was in Costco.
Once when I entered for pizza with the kids, once when in self checkout.
They were nice about it though, not rude.

Must be mandate from corporate. Just like netflix may be a crackdown on card sharing and wanting to get membership numbers up.

Not 20 mayself, but maybe 12-15 years. Been gold and executive, gone year or two without any online purchase, or heck any purchase other than gas, and years of huge purchases- have never once gotten one of their $ off $$ email coupon.
Not sure what their algorithm is for qualifying...

Got it using chat option
Is chat strictly by phone, or is there an actual online text chat option?
Never bothered to do the chat, but gonna try this time around- I got a freezer on order- may cancel and re-order if I can find another $250 to spend on something needed.

Was able to get the coupon code after a chat session, was told it was a "one-time courtesy" as the coupon was meant only for inactive members. My argument that even active members in my family received one and I had not used a promo code since becoming a Costco member in 2020.

Isn't online price for items is costlier and hence the deal?
Good point. They DO charge more for many items when shopping online vs in store. It really annoys me but at least they've gotten better at disclosing that. Still a good coupon, and some things like appliances are great deals and only online.

Just read my post and you see the reason why they are doing it. I didn't even like it, but I guess they will stop doing it after cracking down on misuse of membership by non members after a few months. Just bear with Costco.
Apparently people are misusing their graciousness no ask for a return policy, apparently one of the very few stores with that kind of policy and customer service.

I have seen people returning half empty milk container, half used cookie jar and what not. And those people are from every ethnicity. Not limited to just one ethnicity.

I saw a woman attempt to return a cardboard crate of 5 dozen eggs - with only a half dozen eggs remaining! When I got to the front of the line, I asked the cashier why the woman was returning them… turns out that the woman had claimed they were all broken when she bought them! Which didn't make sense because they are wrapped in clear plastic when you buy them. Anyway, Costco refused the return…. Policy is you must be returning more than half of the food item in order to get a refund.

They don't scan every item in your cart. They scan 3-4 items. Sam's Club has Scan-n-Go, where you scan items with their app and put them in your cart and skip the checkout lines. You actually think it's good business practice to just trust people in accurately scanning every item (or maybe not scanning any of them)? So they scan 3-4 random items in the cart to ensure they were part of your final checkout in the app. Big deal. Keeps costs down by lowering theft and unintended loss. News flash! There are scummy, untrustworthy people in this world. LOTS OF THEM. They don't think twice about stealing.

Agree. The convenience of scan and go (wish Costco also offered it) is worth the few moments where they scan some items in your cart. Overall, still way faster than waiting in either a conventional check out line or self service check out.

Costco is so far behind the technology curve. No Scan-n-Go equivalent and no way to check stock of an item at your local warehouse from their website. Sam's Club saves me trips when I can check the items I need and shows me if they have them in stock or not.

I don't go to Costco much any more because of the convenience of Sam's Club (easier parking, early hours for Plus members, Scan-n-Go, and being able to check availability online). We keep our Costco membership because gas is so cheap and the annual rewards check just from gas pays for our membership plus more!
