Doing a quick search on SD for "samsung 2tb t7", this appears to be about the best price we've seen so far. I picked one up off Amazon. Planning to use it to store movies to play off my iPad when traveling.

FWIW, My 2TB T7 drive melted after ~2 years into a puddle of white thermal compound (search "t7 white substance" on Google). Samsung did end up fully refunding me under warranty but it took about 4 months of waiting and 10 hours of phone calls to finally get them to process the refund.

Is it true that for long time data storage, regular hard drives are better than SSD. Can someone confirm that?
100% true. You can save to hard drive, store for 20 years and it'll be perfect. SSD will have errors.

Just bought an enclosure and NVME drive for about the same price.
If you are curios this guy takes it apart to show what's inside: https://youtu.be/Jew__LIjJy8

After reading this review I am deciding against it. It seems performance drops off the cliff after sustained usage; nowhere near the "up-to" speeds they list.

"White substance," huh? You sure it was your drive?

It's Samsung's "Dynamic Thermal Guard" solution. It's a thermal paste wax which fills the case.If the SSD overheats it leaks out as a clear thick oil.

Yeah, I'm surprised the T7 shield has way better sustained write performance (@ a very small premium): https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...d-review/3

It's still a lot better than the Crucial X8 though.

I heard these overheat and they slow down shortly after file transfer. I wish the t5 was still available. Mine is still running great.

Genuine thought: If you can buy a 2TB Intel 670p for ~$60 and throw it in a $25 enclosure and get the flexibility of having the spare SSD to use later internally/spare enclosure if a better SSD comes up here - why scoop this up?

My 5TB Seagate just died a few weeks ago so I've been looking to get something to hold me over incase my 2TB WD goes the way of the dodo soon too.
I have one of these samsungs, actually the same one, and its great!!! I also have a internal nvme ssd that I pulled out of a laptop and kept. There is a difference between the two. Primarily in temperature. This samsung tends to run cool and I assume all external true ssd are the same. But the internal, that I took out of a laptop and put into a enclosure runs extremely hot within a matter of 3-5min. I mean really really hot that I didn't want to hold it and worried that it could damage my leather couch. I dont leave it plugged in unless im ready to start transferring and then unplug immediately. So keep that in mind. They are not designed to be in a enclosure I guess.

This drive gets hot quick and when it gets too hot, it disconnects. I don't know why Samsung drives are like this.

Where would I get a 2TB 670p for $60 and what enclosure are you using?

Probably not. I would trust solid state ssds or nvme drives sitting on a shelf longer than spinning rust.

I should've said $70, I just misremembered the price when I mentioned it earlier. Sabrent had an enclosure about $25-30 too here previously IIRC.
