Doing a quick search on SD for "samsung 2tb t7", this appears to be about the best price we've seen so far. I picked one up off Amazon. Planning to use it to store movies to play off my iPad when traveling.

FWIW, My 2TB T7 drive melted after ~2 years into a puddle of white thermal compound (search "t7 white substance" on Google). Samsung did end up fully refunding me under warranty but it took about 4 months of waiting and 10 hours of phone calls to finally get them to process the refund.

Is it true that for long time data storage, regular hard drives are better than SSD. Can someone confirm that?
Absolutely not true. SSDs are better in every way.

Genuine thought: If you can buy a 2TB Intel 670p for ~$60 and throw it in a $25 enclosure and get the flexibility of having the spare SSD to use later internally/spare enclosure if a better SSD comes up here - why scoop this up?

My 5TB Seagate just died a few weeks ago so I've been looking to get something to hold me over incase my 2TB WD goes the way of the dodo soon too.
The enclosures are a pain. That's why I'm getting a T7 :-). I do get faster speeds from my home brew Thunderbolt enclosure, but it acts up too much.

If I'm mistaken, upon investigation, it seems many who experienced that issue didn't connect their drives directly to the source. They were connected to HUBS and other extensions, and that could have contributed to the issue, many are saying, though I don't know why. There was mention of a couple of particular HUBs that could have contributted to the problem. Maybe those HUBs kept the "drive" USB port always active?

Also, as others have said, some who placed their portable SSDs in poor airflow situations. Although internal SSDs run well in continuous situations, as a result of planned airflow management within the computer systems, external SSDs when used in non-stop situations can present airflow challenges. Due to the popularity of these "drives", people are using them in so many ways now. In many situations, a USB data stick is a preferable option even though the stats may not be "better".
