Nothing wrong at all with factory blems from Direct Tools, they are indistinguishable from new and come in the protective original packaging.

Refurbs, on the other hand, could be questionable condition and often suffer from shipping damage. Unless you can go to a store, buy blems, not refurbs.

This needs to be repeated constantly. DTO is not allowed by contract to sell Ryobi items as new, as that belongs to Home Depot, so they list them as factory blemished, but in fact are brand new just like you get from HD.

But I would stay away from refurbs, it's hit or miss, but I have been pretty lucky so far.

Any pro out there that can help me with my issue with this planer. I am getting snipe mark at the beginner and ending of my board. I am using a long mdf as a base to try to reduce snipping, but it's not helping.

I was never able to completely get rid of snipe with mine, but it's not too bad anymore. Some planers are like that, you just have to have an extra 3-4 inches of board length before you plane it. It helped on mine to adjust the angle of the infeed tray so that a penny would just fit at the edge of the tray under a level I had running through the planer. The infeed tray needs to be slightly angled so that the board is kind of going down hill into the planer.

Another technique is to hotglue a block of wood at the leading end of the MDF that is the same thickness as the workpiece you are planing.... basically the block of wood would 'snipe' and the workpiece wouldn't..... can do the same thing on the trailing end of the MDF to eliminate snipe on that end too.

I'm an unfortunate hoarder of tools and learned my lesson when I bought this at ~$175 in Feb of this year. Open the box and do a quick inspection because 4 months later when I decided to bust it out for a weekend project...the "Factory Blemish" was more than just a blemish or factory recondition the entire top portion that raises and lowers to plane the wood sheared off the mechanism. It was 100% unusable and i'm not sure how it got past any type of inspection (see pic). I'd still buy again though, it's currently at a Ryobi certified shop for either a replacement or repair.

That's probably shipping damage, not a blemish.

It's strange because the box was fine on the outside, the body of the unit looked fine and I would think the black bar on top would have protected it from most of the damage coming from up top.

I got one of their refurbished bench grinders and it was destroyed and unusable. I reached out they sent me another which was nearly unusable as well luckily I was able to salvage some parts off the other one before sending it back.

The refurbished are a total gamble. However the blemish are infact new products with no issues.
