I've got a pair of ATH-M50X and have eyes on these for a long time. Is this a side grade? I know that these will be open back and have less v-shaped sound but wondering if I should spend more $$ for a more noticeable upgrade

These were almost exactly the same as the HD 650, we are two models past that now, up to HD 660S2. Sennheiser sold enough of the original HD 650 to cover the R&D, marketing, and what not; now they can sell them for a little leas profits, plus they are not naming them HD 650s.

A lot comes down to personal preferences, plus you may need a headphone amp if you don't already have one. When I listen to the M50x and a couple other pairs of open backs back to back, the vocals and instruments stand out a lot more on the open backs. These would be a good entry to open backs if you've never heard one before.

Thank you for the info. I do enjoy hearing vocals and instruments stand out, so I'm definitely interested now! I'm assuming they sound more "veiled" on something closed like ATH-m50x?
Anything you like better about closed compared to open?
