thanks. well i thought i had a 'good level', it's an Empire i beam level guarenteed accuracy of .0005". hmmmm

fairly rigid and i have used it for years no problem, so now i have a project today of learning about 'box level vs i beam level'. may have to start with bing AI chat and see what the brains think of all of this...

[...]

well there you go, better off with a box level, so now to find a 'deal' on box levels. groan.
That's all fine and good, but there's little need to upgrade unless your I-beam level gets damaged, crooked, or bent. They both do the same job and as long as yours can still do the job accurately, carry on...

thanks. just checked home depot and they have the empire blue in a box level, various lengths. may have to get the 24" and see what all the fuss is about box levels. .......and no i don't want to 'tool test' it by throwing it off the roof onto concrete.

Unless tool-abusive, this level will be fine. After decades using a 4-ft extruded aluminum I-beam level that still works great, I just don't buy the argument for box construction.

Do a side-by-side end-drop test with any level against this one. Results won't be that different but one thing's for sure; at least one of them will be broken. Now, how badly did you really wanna know?

So just get it, use it, be happy, and take care with the fireworks.

well i know some of us are going to check this out at the big box store to see what this is all about. my Empire blue i beam is built like a pry bar and i never suspected that this was some kind of inferior tool.

I bought one from ace and am very happy with it. It does what you'd expect it to. Not sure why some comments are acting like we are all tradesmen.

While box levels are great and sturdy, it takes a whole lot of neglect and abuse to actually ruin an I-beam type level...most people who aren't savages will be completely fine with this lol.

This is actually very similar to a HF level that cost 6.99 before 20% coupon. Only difference is the color, the brand and the ruler markings on the craftsman.

Box levels have a 4 point structure and are stronger, more durable, and less likely to lose accuracy from twisting, bending, or breaking. But of course, are more expensive than I-beam construction. I-beam is okay if you are just going to be using it to hang pictures and such, but if you are going to be doing any home construction or heavy remodeling, then a Box level is worth the investment over I-beam.

This isn't the same quality of Sears of yesteryear that would be rebranded levels from a US measuring tools company. I can tell just looking at the picture this one looks super-cheap and outsourced, and paper-thin metal. That thing is going to get all twisted up and mangled real quick. Heck, running a pencil down a straight and true 2x4 is probably going to be more accurate than this thing. If you do get one, I'd recommend getting one at a local store that you can eyeball to see that it is straight. I wouldn't trust UPS or FedEx shipping this thing, it will arrive like a long piece of twisted metal.
I'm not sure where you buy framing studs, but I'd never trust any stud to be straight and true.

Unless there're steel, but you obviously meant wooden.
