thermopop is marketed as 2-3 second readings, the one is marketed for 1 second readings and includes a calibration certificate. not sure if that's useful the vast majority of users!
Auto backlight, auto rotate, more accurate, and faster readings. If you're a professional you have a thermapen, if you're a serious cook you likely have a thermapen, if you are just a home cook who wants a good thermometer you should have a thermopop especially when they go on sale for <$20.
In a consumer setting there's no point.

If you work in a restaurant and do line-checks all the time.... a nice thermometer with instant read times is a thing of beauty.

This is much nicer if you have the money to spend. Turning on the thermopop vs just opening the pen is worth it alone. Also the backlight and auto rotate is super nice. Have used both and much prefer the pen over pop.

I have a thermopop and having to hold it by the bulb often puts your hand right above or below something very hot. I've wished for an angled grip quite a few times to reduce the risk of my hands getting burned. For that reason alone, I'll probably pick this up.

I got my mom one of these because she had a cheap one that took like 10-15 seconds to climb up to the accurate food temperature and seemed like the food would start cooling down by the time it settled at a temperature. She loves this thing because it's instant read and accurate. Helps prevent overcooking chicken because you can check a big pan of ~10 chicken breasts in like 20 seconds. If you cook at home a lot I would recommend it even though it's kinda pricey for a thermometer.

Thankfully they updated the design on these. The old ones used a coin battery and the battery slot would routinely seize up. So if you tried getting the battery out you would run the risk of stripping the compartment and it would forever be stuck.

To their credit, ThermoWorks will fix this defect if you have an older model but you have to work with their support and send the defective unit in.

Was wondering the same thing; thanks for the informative responses! Gotta love SD - I learn more things here, and quicker than hours of time online. Tks, SD'ers! Applause

Im a consumer and I don't like waiting even 3 seconds for a read. This thing is awesome with how quick it is.

These are definitely cream of the crop. I'm a home cook, and I always use it! My rate of overcooking meats has significantly decreased

It reads near instantly. You end up using it for checking doneness of all kinds of things beyond protein. This is the single most important cooking equipment we own. And recently my wife started using it too so we almost never trudge through over cooked anything!

I have a dead one sitting in my drawer. This is far from a once in a lifetime purchase. They die easily. If out of warranty they will fix for a high price or upgrade at a discount similar to this deal. I have a cheapo that I had from before buying this. Still works, with new battery every 3 years or so. I'm not buying another of these. Maybe for 30bucks I might, possibly, would think about it. Meaning not for sure at 30 bucks.
