seems like a solid deal. People will crap on the 12th gen processor but it is still a solid machine for the price point. My son has the 14inch with i5 processor and 8ram for college the past two years and loves it.

If you are gaming on it the 13th gen is a better performer but if not for gaming this should be a solid machine. I have been shopping around for weeks for a decent deal. Trying to stay under $700. ... probably pulling the trigger on this one. (*I do not game...mostly for business work, excel and word work, and some occasional video/photo editing).
Tough to find a laptop with i7 and 16g ram and TB ssd (edit...looks like this is 512GB SSD...not 1TB it has conflicting info). for this price with touch, backlit, etc. ...just trying to get more info on the screen.

But I also am open to others' opinions on this machine.

I've twice had the screen hinge break on two different Flex 5 Chromebooks that I bought my son for school. We've also had keys fall off the keyboard and get lost. I'm sure they're taking abuse from my son at school. I do think they're good machines and good value. But, if you don't care about the tablet capability, maybe better to find a different model.

And what NewEgg & Walmart never tell you:

16GB soldered memory, not upgradable

Also slower memory. This comes with LPDDR4x-4266 instead of LPDDR5-5200

https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/I...82R80002US

More and more computer manufactures getting away from soldered memory in their tablet style laptops, while Lenovo seems to be doing it more and more to their lineups, including their non-tablet style laptops.

But if I don't need more than 16GB RAM... I wouldn't upgrade over 16GB RAM anyway...

So, this laptop would be decent for a lot of us?

Word, excel, small business use, light video/photo editing.

5 year old i5's and i7's can do that, though video editing will have to be light with the Iris video card.

The difference in those memory kits is minimal for the vast majority of users.

In 2017 I bought a Lenovo IP FLEX 4-1580 I5 8G 256 10H for $512 for my home use and it is still going strong. It can run some light gaming for my kid just fine. It is more functional for work than my work supplied surface pro 6.

We are slowly creeping more and more towards what Apple is doing with their devices, making them un-repairable. Hastening accelerated planned obsolescence.

I hope not. I remember the 286 and 386 PCs that had soldered ("fixed") CPUs, memory, etc. I think Packard Bell was the company that soldered the sound blaster into the ISA slots for whatever reason. If one of the DRAM's go bad in these, you have to replace the motherboard also instead of buying a new chip. Confused

At the risk of the Mac koolaid drinkers swarming me, I'd take this over an iPad any day. It's much more versatile than a tablet and more portable than a regular laptop. I'd say it's a pretty sweet spot for most non-hard-core gaming applications. My only concern would be if the memory is soldered onto the MoBo, which if so its obsolete rate is a bit accelerated. If it's upgradeable, then I'd say it has at least 4-5 years of usefulness, IMO.

FWIW...my work laptop is a Dell Latitude 5490, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7300U CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.71 GHz 8GB RAM... probably 5 years old or so...

My personal is a Lenovo Thinkpad T550 (i5 5200 2.20GHz) 12 GB RAM...got it in 2015. NO SSD.

So... this Lenovo Flex 5 with i7 and 16GB HD and SSD should feel like a decent upgrade over both?

I say on the specs it would be a decent upgrade. But it depends on your line of work. For context, I do IT field work and having a lightweight device that can double as a tablet, when I need to capture customer signatures a touchscreen is a nice feature to have. When I have to go between sites, lugging around something lightweight but decently powerful is also good. Even screen size at 16" is great. I say at this price point, you're getting a decent upgrade.

Appreciate the input...
Day job: Teacher...so won't use this for daily workday stuff...

I have a small LLC on the side to run some sports events. Use it a lot over a two month period in May/June....(but even then mostly excel and word processing stuff...website management). then most of the rest of the year would be very light work... occasional highlight video editing but I have even managed that on these two older machines.

The beauty of these devices is a good dock and external monitor setup and you still have a great "desktop" device. Kind of funny but in the past 5 years at least, I haven't seen too many companies working with desktops anymore. They for the most part have gone with laptops. I guess having a "battery backup" built in is probably one of the best reasons.
