If I can help at all keeping a B&M bookstore open at the same price, I'll definitely choose that.
The appeal is usually due to the care taken in remastering plus the comprehensive bonus content. The packaging is reliably standard and only occasionally interesting.
ya think that might reveal more about you than the films?

it's all personal taste. NASCAR might be more your speed

Getting errors adding items to cart. Also $20-35 for a single film seems high. I guess the appeal is that there are some rarer films and they're packaged in collector's edition cases with accessories.

50% off list price. Amazon's regular pricing always has Criterion stuff at 40-50% off list price.

While Amazon does offer some titles at good discounts regularly, what you posted is not accurate. If Criterion titles were always discounted that heavily at Amazon, these sales would not be nearly as meaningful. Amazon generally matches B&N prices whenever they have a sale, and there are other times when they have their own sales, but to say that their regular prices are always 40-50% off list is not really the case. You can check the 3 camels for pricing history.

For example, The Fisher King 4K has a list price of $50 and was released in April. It was at $35 (30% off) for a while and has spent the past week or so at around 35% off. I wouldn't be surprised if the price drops to 50% off soon, but as of yet, this title hasn't ever been more than 35% off.

Many titles were discounted, but received further discounts to price match B&N on this sale. A few examples on my wishlist (which you can check against CCC if you wish) include:

Harikari: $27.10 -> $19.99
My Dinner with Andre: $27.33 -> $19.99
Jeanne Dielman: $27.33 -> $19.99

Some did not receive discounts. This could be because they just didn't want to price match or because (at least in one case) B&N was not selling it. A few examples include:

Roma: $26.12 (Not listed in stock on B&N)
Make Way for Tomorrow: $27.88 (listed at $19.99 on B&N, Amazon not price matching)
Infernal Affiars: $61.73 (listed at $49.99 on B&N, Amazon not price matching)

Many of their releases, like remasters, are approved by the directors when possible. And some restoration processes can be extensive. Martin Scorsese shows this when discussing the restoration of The Red Shoes. So that can give you an idea of what can be involved in a restoration and why their films cost what they do. You can see a video of him discussing it here [youtube.com]

Just a slight correction - Okja 4K, Devil in a Blue Dress 4K, and Raging Bull 4K are not pre-orders. All three of these titles have already been released. Time Bandits is also available as a 4K release for $24.99.
