Alienware vs Acer are two opposite ends of the spectrum. Alienware is a premium brand, and Acer is low quality. By that, I don't just mean quality of components and build quality. The biggest differences are in cooling and thermal management.

Alienware has a very good cooling design, to control thermals, especially the 17 inch model, which has great heat dissipation.

This allows:
1. much less thermal throttling
2. higher wattage power fed into the graphics card
3. greater frame rates, and better performance

If you want a better idea of actual gaming performance, look at the wattage of the power supply, how much power the laptop supplies to the discrete graphics, and then look at actual frame rate and benchmark numbers from online reviews and YouTube videos.

This is the reason why you won't ever see 14" laptops with 4090 graphics accelerators. They can't handle the heat, can't supply enough power to the graphics, and even if they do try to squeeze it in, these laptops suffer from horrible thermal throttling.

The other comment is correct. These laptops are designed for different purposes. A 17" laptop is far less portable. Ever try taking a 17" laptop with a bag and power supply on an airplane? Setting it up on the seat? You will see how impractical it is, and where a 14" or 15" laptop make more sense. However, if you have it sitting 95% of the time on AC power as a desktop replacement, then the 17" with super high refresh is ideal for gaming, especially FPS. 17" is much more comfortable for long term use than 14 or 15".

So decide what kind of laptop you have a need for, and then find the best deal for a laptop in that segment. Don't go chasing after the best "deal" and end up with a laptop that is impractical for your daily use!

This is a great deal, but that 1080p 300nits display is lackluster..

Just skimming the 2... what pops out is that Acer is a 15" with a higher resolution screen Alienware is 17" with a lower resolution screen. Acer has a 10 key which has pros and cons, if you need 10 key it can be nice if you don't then it throws the keyboard way off center relative to the screen which can be annoying. Hardware wise they are pretty similar the performance on either looks like it is going to be within 5-10% on everything and most things are pretty much even.
Personally I don't like Acer but honestly every companies quality control seems to be total garbage now so I can't really hold it against just them anymore.

I'm fairly in the dark on most of these terms, are you saying it's not that great for price point, and there's another model that's potentially faster for same price?
All depends on how you use it and budget. You can get the latest and greatest but it will cost 2x. For me I dont need to play a game at max mode and rather pay much less. In terms of the value, this is no doubt great deal.

1080p @ 360hz is the same processing power (strictly numbers not real world 1:1) as 4k @ 90hz... Keep that in mind when you look at resolution but don't take into consideration framerates... for a gaming laptop.
even from a numbers stand point
resolution and frame rate do not work that way, there are so many other factors to account for, bandwidth, video memory, cache, etc.

Yea, given my budget I'm definitely not wanting or expecting the best of the best. Would like something solid and with potential be used years down the road. Want to be able to play modern games, indies etc don't need some crazy high visual performance, but would hope it wouldn't have any issues running most of anything. Given the price, how would you say it holds up against others that'd be in this category? Appreciate the feedback!

Looks like tge OP link is an already built bundle that has the Dell Premium Service selected. I got it for $976.33 out the door by doing the following

Go to the dell website and look up the laptop, select the specs listed
-AMD CPU
-AMD GPU
-32G RAM
-1TB SSD

Then on the next page remove the "dell premium support" or whatever its called and choose mail-in service, this will further discount the price to to about 1,000.99, Then put in the 10% discount code and you will be at $900. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for this one, totally missed this before checkout. I canceled my initial order, and ordered again. New price after tax with Amex cash back $839

Like someone stated above, it falls somewhere in between a 3070ti or 3080ti depending on the game. CPU performance is slightly lower than the i7 12700, but similar to a 5800 desktop CPU.

Also, for those of you that have a American Express card, you can get an additional $120 cash back. I just put in my order, and after taxes I will be at $1030.18. And for that price, I don't see myself getting a better deal any time soon.
Thanks, is this laptop too big and heavy?
I need to upgrade my 16yr old laptop. It's been through so many blue screen of death among other things, I can barely do anything with it and I need a laptop for school which I need to use it in school (college) I'm wondering if this would be okay for me take it to school while taking public transportation

Unfortunately, the subtotal isn't lowering for me when I remove the Premium Support. If anyone has any additional advice, I would appreciate it.

How do you get it to accept the basic support. When I select it, it changes from -199.00 to included and doesn't change the price

I bought the alienware m17 r5 from last week's slickdeal. I had to return it after finding out the display port on USB C is wired to the integrated cpu/gpu and my Valve index would not work with this laptop.
The 3060 one? Does that mean no Valve games will play? Mine just arrived

It is a big and heavy laptop, 7.3lbs without the charger. I personally wouldn't want to drag that with me to school every day. Then again, if you were to get this laptop, it does have great battery life According to reviews, 7-9 hours of light use.

It is big and heavy: about 7.5 lbs for laptop alone plus another 2+ lbs for the largish power supply.

You mean the 10% coupon you get by signing up for the email newsletter? You can try using a different email address, but that's about it.

It looks like Dell fixed it. No longer lowering the price when selecting basic support. It was earlier, but not now.
