Alienware vs Acer are two opposite ends of the spectrum. Alienware is a premium brand, and Acer is low quality. By that, I don't just mean quality of components and build quality. The biggest differences are in cooling and thermal management.

Alienware has a very good cooling design, to control thermals, especially the 17 inch model, which has great heat dissipation.

This allows:
1. much less thermal throttling
2. higher wattage power fed into the graphics card
3. greater frame rates, and better performance

If you want a better idea of actual gaming performance, look at the wattage of the power supply, how much power the laptop supplies to the discrete graphics, and then look at actual frame rate and benchmark numbers from online reviews and YouTube videos.

This is the reason why you won't ever see 14" laptops with 4090 graphics accelerators. They can't handle the heat, can't supply enough power to the graphics, and even if they do try to squeeze it in, these laptops suffer from horrible thermal throttling.

The other comment is correct. These laptops are designed for different purposes. A 17" laptop is far less portable. Ever try taking a 17" laptop with a bag and power supply on an airplane? Setting it up on the seat? You will see how impractical it is, and where a 14" or 15" laptop make more sense. However, if you have it sitting 95% of the time on AC power as a desktop replacement, then the 17" with super high refresh is ideal for gaming, especially FPS. 17" is much more comfortable for long term use than 14 or 15".

So decide what kind of laptop you have a need for, and then find the best deal for a laptop in that segment. Don't go chasing after the best "deal" and end up with a laptop that is impractical for your daily use!

This is a great deal, but that 1080p 300nits display is lackluster..

Just skimming the 2... what pops out is that Acer is a 15" with a higher resolution screen Alienware is 17" with a lower resolution screen. Acer has a 10 key which has pros and cons, if you need 10 key it can be nice if you don't then it throws the keyboard way off center relative to the screen which can be annoying. Hardware wise they are pretty similar the performance on either looks like it is going to be within 5-10% on everything and most things are pretty much even.
Personally I don't like Acer but honestly every companies quality control seems to be total garbage now so I can't really hold it against just them anymore.

Any recommendations on a second hard drive for this? I was looking for 2GB or higher with a decent heat sink, but I couldn't tell if the covers on this had a built in heat sink. Any feedback would be appreciated.
I like to know this as well. I've installed many ssd without heat sink. Not sure if it's really necessary.

This laptop ships with heat sinks for both drives, even if it only comes with 1 drive installed. I would pick up the 2tb Samsung 980 pro that's on this site for $99.

Looks like tge OP link is an already built bundle that has the Dell Premium Service selected. I got it for $976.33 out the door by doing the following

Go to the dell website and look up the laptop, select the specs listed
-AMD CPU
-AMD GPU
-32G RAM
-1TB SSD

Then on the next page remove the "dell premium support" or whatever its called and choose mail-in service, this will further discount the price to to about 1,000.99, Then put in the 10% discount code and you will be at $900. Hope this helps.
They may have removed the option to take off premium support and choose 'mail-in service' instead. Not seeing it on the next page or anywhere else. Unless its something with the browser I'm using, it's gone. Anyone else finding it now?

It does indeed stack, it's how I'm ending up at $839 after tax.
Lucky duck. I'm at $1173 after tax so $1053 after the AmEx credit.

So, apparently, since this is an AMD CPU/GPU the CPU can access the DDR6 RAM from the 6850m GPU. Has anyone tried gaming (on battery) just using the 680m iGPU?

Wow, that is quite heavy for a laptop. My commute to school takes about 1.5 on the bus and lots of walking. Plus, I finally finished general ed class so this fall semester I'm gonna be going over my major in CS. So I need a laptop that can do coding, homework, and gaming.I guess I will wait for something lighter with about the same specs, because I have been gaming on my 16yr laptop and it's been unberable. The only games I can play without crashing or freezing is stardew valley, don't starve together, travellers rest, basically super light indie games. It has also been terrible for school, I've lost papers when it crashed but which I learned to save every time I type something, but I finally saved enough to treat myself with something nice Smilie
Highly recommend a smaller laptop…
17" is massive and extremely cumbersome unless you are just an absolute unit of a person.

Personally I think 14" is ideal for most people. I have a legion 5 pro 16" and I already consider that too big and heavy to move around practically. Lenovo slim pro 14" with the 3050 is (for me) the best of both worlds, light and portable with more than enough power for comp sci work and casual gaming.

Zephyrus 14" is a little bigger and heavier than the slim pro, but more powerful if that's your thing…also has amazing battery life for a gaming laptop. Runs hot, as expected in an aluminum 14" with that sort of GPU.

Can I split payment between two Amex cards and get the offer on both? And do I need to hit 599 after or before tax on each card?

If a laptop is heavy to you, you'll never make it in any physical line of work. Firefighters, officers and soldiers regularly carry heavier equipment than laptops...

Thank you, I watched youtube videos of the Alienware its very bulky and big would not fit on my backpack and taking the bus everyday to school carrying that would be a huge issue for me.
I ended up buying an open box laptop for about $400

I'm so happy with my purchase, I can finally retired my 16yr old laptop with integrated graphic, and now I can play better games and won't be dealing with crashes. I was looking into trying to squeeze a little more life from my 16yr old laptop by buying an SSD SATA because I recently got a few errors of failing HDDs but now I don't need to bother with that because I bought a new laptop. I'm so happy, thanks to all the slickdealers for finding great deals and I learned a lot from these laptop threads.

I bought the alienware m17 r5 from last week's slickdeal. I had to return it after finding out the display port on USB C is wired to the integrated cpu/gpu and my Valve index would not work with this laptop.
May I how you came to that conclusion? The specs seems to indicate that it does

"3. Type-C Port (Includes USB 3.2 Gen 2, Display Port 1.4 and Power Delivery (5V/3A) capabilities)(USB4®, Display Port 1.4 and Power Delivery (5V/3A) capabilities available on AMD Radeon™graphics or NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™3060 graphics and above)"

Question for those who know, this will be a gaming desktop replacement. My question is should I opt for this or a custom desktop with these specs:
12th gen i7
Rtx 3070
16gb ram
2tb ssd

I keep hearing that mobile can't be compared like for like with desktops and that laptops can get hot and loud so I'm hoping someone on here can give a more relative comparison of the two.
For me, I always go for laptop. A) I rarely do any upgrades other than memory/ssd B) I also use it as a secondary monitor along with my ultrawide monitor.

I'd say if you have a case where you can really utilize 100% of the spec and upgrade the cpu in the future then go desktop. For me, this will be my computer for at least next 8 years or so.

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to. I would think it's $599 after taxes.
