Perhaps its because some individually-owned establishments are absolutely amazing.

The "Dale" (Ace) Hardware by me is absolutely amazing. It's always impeccably clean and everyone there is incredibly nice and helpful. Somehow most associates even have a lot of hands-on experience with some of their departments. It's always a joy to go and shop there.

Convenient locations and helpful employees that know what they're selling. The whole concept is baked around saving you time in exchange for a few extra bucks.

The Ace near my work always greets me when I come in the door. They have awesome charcoal in stock and the key cutter made me a working key off a bent and mangled one. An associate will literally walk me right to what I want. If I ask questions they get the employee who works the department to answer them. There's this savant kid that can match a fastener in seconds ("that's a 1/4-20 grade 8 stainless bolt 3/4" long. We don't have that size but we do have 1" that will probably work. You can use a hacksaw or a Dremel to cut it in a pinch. Do you need nuts or washers to go with it?"). The old timey hardware store in my town is a little better, mostly because all the guys working are that savant kid with 50 more years of experience.

Compare this experience to going to the edge of town to Lowes where they are always short staffed, nobody knows the products, half the stuff you need is out of stock and the wait to check out is like 30 minutes. Lowes only wins if you are buying lumber or a big amount of pre-ordered materials.

That isle with the tiny screws and oddball bolts, nuts, and other strange fasteners that you can't get anywhere else? That's the only reason I ever go to Ace Hardware. Otherwise I have to order it online and wait days/weeks.

I'm not saying it's true or not but Ace regularly makes top franchise lists, including the #1 spot in a few including Entrepreneur Magazine a few years back.

Not everyone lives near an HD or Lowes, or is able to order things online.

Not everyone wants to go to an HD or Lowes, or wants to order things online.

Often find a smaller hardware store is a lot easier to get in and out of quickly instead of navigating around a huge big-box store.

Screw Island. It's a reality show. Look for it on TLC, the learning channel.

Even after discount, the price at ACE is outrages. Better go HD or Lowes.
Paint is comparable to Lowes/HD.
