About this title:
  • Length: 321 pages
  • From the creator of the wildly popular webcomic xkcd, hilarious and informative answers to important questions you probably never thought to ask Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's iconic webcomic.
  • His stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language, and love have an enormous, dedicated following, as do his deeply researched answers to his fans' strangest questions. The queries he receives range from merely odd to downright diabolical:
    • What if I took a swim in a spent-nuclear-fuel pool?
    • Could you build a jetpack using downward-firing machine guns?
    • What if a Richter 15 earthquake hit New York City?
    • Are fire tornadoes possible?
  • His responses are masterpieces of clarity and wit, gleefully and accurately explaining everything from the relativistic effects of a baseball pitched at near the speed of light to the many horrible ways you could die while building a periodic table out of all the actual elements.

Great on Kindle

In the New York Times best-selling book from the creator of the wildly popular webcomic xkcd, Randall Munroe gives hilarious and informative answers to important questions you probably never thought to ask.

Fans of xkcd ask Munroe a lot of strange questions. What if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent the speed of light? How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? If there was a robot apocalypse, how long would humanity last? What if everyone only had one soulmate? What would happen if the moon went away?

In pursuit of answers, Munroe ran computer simulations, pored over stacks of declassified military research memos, solved differential equations, and consulted with nuclear reactor operators. His responses are masterpieces of clarity and hilarity, complemented by signature xkcd comics. (They often predict the complete annihilation of humankind, or at least a really big explosion.)

Far more than a book for geeks, What If? explains the laws of science in operation in a way that every intelligent reader will enjoy and feel much smarter for having read.

...and curious adults too. Well thought out and full of hilarious situations. I was also lucky enough to get "What If? 2" when it went on sale in April for $2.

I flipped through a few pages of the first What If? book. Really interesting, but I would not want this as an eBook. There are lots of pictures, different formatting, etc that makes me think eBook is not the preferable method for it. Maybe on an iPad or a Kindle Scribe, but not a typical small screen Kindle.

This is a great physical book. Written by the guy who makes the XKCD comics. Guy is so clever.

think this is the book that has calmed me down cosiderably when i found out that if zombies were to happen, they wouldnt last due to heat and sun and birds eating them and they would cease to be a threat within a few days, zombie movies dont scare me as much

So far I haven't had an issue reading this on my various Kindle's, but if you think this would be a problem, why don't you just download the Kindle app onto your PC or Chromebook, which all have bigger screens. However the majority of the drawings are rather simple line drawings, so not a major problem viewing on a regular 7 in Kindle.

I'll probably buy the physical copy of this at some point, but kindle was also an insta buy. Good for killing some time and at this price a nice thing just to throw in your kindle library.

Looks like it's $2.99 now. Still worth it! Bought it with digital credits that always expire on me anyway.
