You really don't have to give Amazon your money for things like this. Most local libraries have an app where you can read all of these for free. I use the Libby app but there are others out there. With the cost of living now, why give Amazon any more than you have to?

Yeah, library apps have lots of books for free (well, mostly paid for by taxes & donations). The drawback is that you might need to wait in line for an ebook, you could only borrow the ebook for a limited duration, & your ebook notes are not permanently saved.
I prefer Barnes & Noble Nook over Amazon Kindle, because Amazon is turning into a corporate monopoly with excess influence over politics.
The reason why I buy ebooks or paper books is because I want a copy for the long-term. Sometimes I read a book slowly to better understand it. Sometimes I need to repeatedly check out the data in the book. Sometimes I want to financially support the author.
How similar to the show are the books past the general setting?
I liked the show and wish I had read the books first.
Overall pretty close storyline and character motivations. There are some scenarios that were created for the show, and things that are out of order based on the books, but otherwise did a good job. I read Wool about a decade ago and was inspired to read Shift, the next book in the series, after watching Silo. Shift has been a fun one because it's an origin story that also ties in some loose ends from the book that fell a little flat on my first read.

Second this. Also, you can borrow audio version of books too. Support your local library and save money - get your library card today.

The show does a solid job of keeping it like the books. Books are definitely worth reading, Hugh Howey is an absolute wordsmith, and I enjoyed the books more than I've enjoyed the show so far.

There are ways around the 2 week limit for borrows. Some people consider them "bad" so I won't go into detail. It's not difficult to figure out on your own.

It's a 3 book series. The Apple TV show is wayyyy too slow paced imo. Season 1 of the show is done by about page 75 in the first book.
