Edit to add:
- some threads reference better heat dissipation on the Samsung vs Sandisk after extended use. this is probably to be expected based on the designs
- broadly, more complaints exist about Sandisk SSD drives failing, than do about Samsung SSD disks failing. this is not specific to these models
- the Samsung aluminum exterior probably would survive some drops. it is not marketed that way (would compete against their "Shield" SSD) and they didn't pursue an IP rating, maybe that can tell you something
TLDR: use your judgment
I used Clonezilla to make a backup of Grannies drive, restored it to VirtualBox virtual drive on my system (had to use one of those RoyalCDKeys I got from here on mine) to make sure it worked. It performed way better as a VM on my system than it did on native hardware.
I bought two of these drives - one each for my mother and one for my aunt. I put GreenVBox on one of the drives, and restored the image to it, then copied one drive to the other. On my mothers computer I didn't even have to worry about Windows licenses, I already had a retail Pro key on her computer and I checked the box to let the UEFI show through - Windows didn't nag me at all on her system. My aunt doesn't have her drive yet.
On fairly up to date - not even the latest system - Windows 10 ran just fine with anti-virus and anti-spyware in place. My moms computer is a few years old i5 that does at least USB 3.1. Granny's system ran just a little better over USB on this drive than it did natively on her hardware. Not bad for a USB connection. I do not doubt the performance level of this drive, it has proven itself by having a full Windows 10 VM run on it with reasonable performance for me. I was even using the A connector since C wasn't available on her computer.
