Book details:
Audiobook narrated by Cary Elwes & Seth MacFarlane
Length: 17hrs, 23min
A prescient warning of a future we now inhabit, where fake news stories and Internet conspiracy theories play to a disaffected American populace
"A glorious book... A spirited defense of science... From the first page to the last, this book is a manifesto for clear thought." - Los Angeles Times
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don't understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.
Casting a wide net through history and culture, Sagan examines and authoritatively debunks such celebrated fallacies of the past as witchcraft, faith healing, demons, and UFOs. And yet, disturbingly, in today's so-called information age, pseudoscience is burgeoning with stories of alien abduction, channeling past lives, and communal hallucinations commanding growing attention and respect. As Sagan demonstrates with lucid eloquence, the siren song of unreason is not just a cultural wrong turn but a dangerous plunge into darkness that threatens our most basic freedoms.

"I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...
The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance."
I wish I could leave you billions and billions of rep
Picked this up for $4.95 in 2017. It's a shame Audible isn't keeping sale titles below $5 anymore these days but I would say it's definitely worth $7.99 if you don't have any free or cheap credits.

It is too bad about the increased prices. But at least the sale price isn't limited to paying Audible customers.

To add to the well-deserved superlatives here, I want to say that this book is literature. People who claim that science cannot answer philosophical or religious questions won't take answers they don't like.

How do you define "belief"?
And why seek an exorcist, can't imagine anything better than being possessed by Carl Sagan.
