On my RG35XX, I installed Garlic OS and downloaded my own library of ROMs as most online sources recommended. There's no rhyme or reason with the included roms, they're a garbled mess of random languages and dumps.

Every review also says to replace the garbage micro SD that comes with the device as well. You can actually create your own micro SD with Garlic OS and your own ROMs before you even get the device. Just plug and play once the unit arrives.

I bought this 2 years ago when this was a clear winner for price to performance, but the retro-handheld space has blown up where that is no longer the case, even at this price. This does not have bluetooth, wifi, or hdmi-out. Anything past ps1 is hit or miss, but found only handheld emulation (gb, gbc, gba) legible on the 3.5 inch screen. This is a clear winner for GBA lovers, since the 3:2 inch screen is a perfect aspect ratio match. If I were to buy a retro-handheld today, I would get the powkiddy X55, which has great community software, hdmi-out, wifi, bluetooth, larger screen, and better performance, for under $100. Both are best when flashing a custom OS to an SD card , and would pass if that's not something that sounds fun to do.

I'm looking at the RG35XX but don't like how the games are numbered rather than by name in alphabetical order. Is there a way to change that?
Not to be a killjoy but "No, No you don't!" You're post also reminded me I don't need this. I have two DS Lites in my house capable of running everything this can and more. Loving passed to my two children, but they rarely use them.

I also have a dedicated PC in the living room with retro arch and a plethora of controllers. Something I bet you have or could do with an old PC on hand.

Must resist the nostalgia buy! 😁

The units with the T618 are going to be the best option right now (Retroid Pocket 3+, etc.) without getting into the more handheld PC/large Android gaming device space, at which point things get significantly more expensive (like $300+). Keep in mind the T618 is Android only, no Linux and you won't find one for $69. They run more in the $140-160 range.

The next best will be something like the RG353P/V/PS, etc. which have an RK3566. This device here has an RK3326, which is quite a bit less powerful. The RK3566 can play N64 games with no issue, especially on Android, and I believe can play Saturn and Dreamcast with no problems as well (you should verify with reviews, though. I don't play Sega much). Those also won't be found for only $69. I believe the RG353PS is the cheapest option with that chipset and it's still going to run you ~$100 on the Anbernic AliExpress page. The RG353PS is cheaper than the other comparable handhelds because it doesn't have Android, which means some N64 games may have slight performance issues.

How long does the Garlic OS loading ROm's thing take? I'm tempted to bite but I don't want to spend hours like i did on past emulators getting all right games and what not.

It's just the filenames. You simply remove the numbers by connecting the micro sd to your computer and rename the files. There are tools that makes batch renaming easier.

Is the powkiddy considered the best out there today? PSP capability outside of a Vita and Android sounds great.

Hi. I have the 351v, same processor as this and screen size, but vertical. Great device. My reco…. Given the screen size, great devices for playing up to PS1. I got ProPinball timeshock running great on it but the screen is really a bit too small tk really enjoy playing it.

So I would reco a device like this that is pocketable for up to PS1, probably do not need analog sticks. WiFi is nice to have for retro achievements and setup.

Then for anything beyond PS1 get something with a bigger screen. Could keep it reasonable with a pow kiddy or go to a steam deck or even the new asus Rog. Also check out the retroid pocket 3 plus which is a crowd favorite.

Kicking myself because I was thinking of getting an old school Nintendo type thing cuz I've been buying the arcade games lately and liking them but my daughter had an original DS and I just gave it to the neighbor a couple of months ago. and it sounds like that's kind of what I needed? LOL.I'll get this figured out

I think it's important to note that saturn emulation requires much more processing power than dreamcast. At least, that's been my experience. I'll mention that I've really only played with YabaSanshiro 2 on android for a decent length though. Dreamcast is pretty easy to emulate, probably not on this though. Just my 2 cents, please correct me if I'm wrong.
