My absolute favorite book series. Over the course of the nine books, the authors do such an amazing job establishing an alternate world where we have a presence in space. Generally, everything that happens and plays out is grounded in reality, backed by science, or fits the narrative of the politics taking place at the time. I highly recommend this (and the audiobooks) to any scifi person.
Excellent series the closest thing to Games of Thrones but in space.

One of my favorite series. Each book seemed like a different genre of storytelling. This one like true crime noir. Not my favorite book in the series but a definite must.

I'm rewatching the series on Prime right now. It's better than anything else on tv even though I've seen it once already. I have not read the books but intend to. It's been interesting rewatching it, as I didn't realize how much I missed the first time around.

I watched the series on Prime first, and then read the books. Well, I stopped after 1.5 books because I was kinda bored - I knew everything that was going to happen. Usually there is so much more detail and backstory, etc. in the book a show is based on that reading it is a fun and different experience than watching. But here, the show runners seemed to use the books as a script - it was all there with very little changed or left out.

None of this is a complaint. I loved the "TV" series and seeing the universe the author created (that felt like it could be the near future a lot of the time). I guess I'm just disappointed that I didn't start with the books. Then I could have loved the stories and worldbuilding in the books and been dazzled by the TV show bringing the books to life.

That's probably what made the tv series so good — they followed the books, which almost never happens. Usually Hollywood thinks they know better and only very loosely follows the book.

FWIW there ARE more background (and story) differences in the later books...as the show went on it began pruning characters out from the books (or combining several into one for expediency and cost)... plus there's short stories and novellas in between the books that fill more stuff in.

And most importantly- there's 3 entire books (and several novellas) set beyond the finale of the TV series.

As this is on sale ALL THE TIME, I'm not sure what makes it such a Front Page SlickDeal?

It's really good, but I have to say that it took me 4 or 5 episodes to get into it.

I started it a few times but never made it past 2 or 3. Finally someone said I had to watch a few more and I was hooked!

I thought they finished the story with those characters?

IIRC (from the internet, not from reading), the next book was '50 years later' or something like that.

EDIT: Looking around via Google, I can find nothing to confirm nor deny the above premise.

The first season was also made by SYFI channel or whatever it is. Then they cancelled it (budgeting, I think) and Amazon picked it up for the remainder of the series.

Like another comment, the series does condense the story and pacing and wrapped up the show fairly quickly. It easily could have had 2-3 more seasons based on all the content left out.

I've not read them all; but I followed along and the comments from others would fill in additional details. Lots of, wish they would haves about missing stuff from certain scenes in each episode or season.

Because I happen to have credits to use now, just started a 10-day vacation at my cabin, and after watching the series 3 times, this was perfect timing to start reading the books. Slickdeals knew all of this and serendipitously made it FP for me. Wink

Most definitely not.

The last 3 books (not 1) are a couple decades later, but not 50 years, and largely follow the same main characters (and many of the same secondary ones)

The majority of the whole series was done with Syfy-- 36 episodes over 3 seasons....After 3 seasons Syfy cancelled it and Amazon revived it for 26 more episodes over 3 overall shorter seasons.
