The $117 price is only for Prime members, but I just signed up for a free 30-day Prime trial that they seem to perpetually offer.

This is the lowest it's ever been on Amazon. Great deal!

I wonder if this means there's a new model coming soon?

It's also surprising to see this so cheap with all the wildfire smoke affecting new regions this year.

Really good price for the 5500-2. Real shame it uses a different HEPA filter (H versus the A models) than the 5300-2, else it would be nice to have overlap in all the extra filters I got. These models work well for medium to small rooms.
You can use the old filters

Is this better than Coway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) that's $150

Limited-time deal for Prime Members: Coway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) True HEPA Purifier with Air Quality Monitoring, Auto, Timer, Filter Indicator, and Eco Mode, 16.8 x 18.3 x 9.7, White https://a.co/d/blpyCJP

Update: winix has VOC (odor) sensor vs coway's dust sensor, coway can move more air due to diff type of carbon/charcoal pre-filter. So winix for odor/gas reduction vs coway for dust/particle

It's some plastic, and a tiny motor. This thing doesn't cost much more to manufacture than a box fan which sells for $15. The paper filter costs pennies to make.

The fact that it costs $100+ is entirely due to people's lack of awareness.
Do you have a source for true HEPA filters costing pennies to make?

No WiFi is a deal breaker. I add my WiFi models to home assistant so I can turn them back on after a power outage. When you live with people with asthma and have a filter in every room it's a real chore to go around and turn them back on.
These use next to no power. Get a small UPS for each bedroom, plug alarm clocks & filters into it. Disable UPS beep. You'll be good unless you have a crazy long outage.

Sorry to hear that. How often do you get power outages for this to be a problem??
That works both ways for power. If you have outages often hen it's annoying to keep turning them all on. If it's infrequent then you forget all about turning it back on for days/weeks until you start sneezing and put together why.

These 5500 units are great when in a decently lit area otherwise the auto snooze makes it less efficient and you may be better with a wifi unit.

The autosense on these units are better than the C545 (I have several of each unit and the 5300s)

I prefer the 5500 over the 5300 due to the better filter. The 5300 only "+" is that it's cheaper. You're on SD, get the 5500 or the c545 for a deal.

The c545 has a bonus in that you can ramp it up once or twice a day through scheduling for 15 minutes to help circulate the room. It can also turn itself back on after power outages due to this along with working well in dimly lit areas due to scheduling.

WI-FI is usually sketchy with low end appliances anyhow

Buy a smart outlet like a Kasa, problem solved.

Only works if the filters power back to last state and they don't they are always off.

The filtering itself does not power back on when power is restored. I have not used Kasa before but I'm not certain how it could restart the functioning of the device. The C545 turns wifi on when power is restored. The filtering does not start back but once a scheduled auto time occurs it begins functioning as normal.

A UPS would work but can be unsightly in some areas where the unit is standalone, which is usually the case, as otherwise the items nearby restrict airflow and always end up dusty.

You still don't have the advantages of scheduling with these solutions that wifi in the unit provide.

FYI, I'm not arguing one unit over the other. I prefer both in certain areas depending on each pros/cons. The 5500 main pro IMO is that the auto sense feature is much better than a c545 and color preference of the unit in the right area. The rewashable filter is nice too.

It doesn't solve anything. These filter units defaults to off after a power outage(when power comes back). The smart outlet will only turn it off remotely, it won't turn on the air filter after you've turned it off or after a power outage.

Winix is not a low end appliance or company. I've never had an issue with the wifi on the units and have checked that our power use spikes at the 3am hour when the wifi units ramp up, consistently.

I do however have a seperate "IoT" 2.4 bandwidth just for that purpose with 5 disabled on it, to prevent issues.
