700:1 contrast
250 nits
1080p
75 Hz

so many downsides, I wouldn't recommend this.

I have two LG 29" UW monitors, though they're previous versions of this one -- a 29UM50 and a 29UB55. They both appear to have the same specs as the one in this post (250nits, 2560x1080, 75Hz refresh rate, IPS panel, one HDMI / one DP, "three side virtually borderless display", etc). They're pretty good monitors, in my opinion.

Are they going to match a 1440p 144Hz (or higher) monitor? No, but you're going to pay a hell of a lot more than the ~$200 I paid (each) for the two I've got, or the $140 being asked for the monitor in this post. If I needed another of these monitors, I'd be in for one here... Thanks, OP!

My primary use case was media consumption and gaming on the console. Realized that I would be stuck with black borders on the sides with everything I do, and so decided to return it. Wouldn't mind it for work, bit nono for media since it's difficult to find 21:9 content

Aren't like 75% of movies closer to this aspect ration than 16:9?

You're kidding, right? Few of the new TV shows coming out are still 16:9, and movies certainly aren't. I foresee TV's being 21:9 in the very near future because of this, and manufactures wanting to give people a compelling reason to replace their 16:9 TV's.

I wish this would be the case, I'd much prefer ultrawide to 8k. Filming TV shows and broadcasting TV in 21:9 are two very different things

I have this , it's good . But from my experience if you are getting any big monitors better to get curved because you have to move your head to see from one end to other end. I like the features that screen control software offers . I just don't like the stand of this monitor , it sucks but if you are mounting then it may be fine.
