Specs and pricing are great, you are correct. This performs on about the same level of the desktop GTX 1080 (non-Ti), AMD RX 6600 (non-XT), or mobile 3070Ti. The reviews do complain about fan noise and heat, which I would have expected. I have a Dell Vostro with 3050Ti that has horrible heat issues, so maybe I am just expecting that from all low/mid "gaming" laptops?
If you don't like the screen it comes with, you can just pick up a 27 inch 1080p 165hz monitor for $100-$130. Either way the screen will cost more so you decide whether you want it on the laptop or externally.
Agree. 75% of people will probably connect this to a monitor 75% of the time they use it. So I don't see how it's a big deal. I know almost zero gamers with laptops who use the laptop as a primary monitor. It's always secondary.
45% NTSC needs to die. I can deal with 250 nits but can't deal with washed out, black=gray colors. The screen is the one part you actually look at for hundreds or thousands of hours. Not worth it to cheap out on it.
Agreed. I want a gaming laptop with OLED or mini LED.
How does this compare against the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro from Costco for $950? (3050ti, i7 12th gen, 512gb SSD) Better value for money?
At the price of $950, that legion 5 Pro with a 3050 Ti, is a pretty bad deal itself, no need to do any comparsion there. Right now, there are plenty of deals within $1k with RTX 3060 and sometimes even a RTX 3070 Graphiccs.
Can anyone say which of these is better or if there is something better in that price range? I would appreciate it. I mostly want it for light gaming around the house, not even new games particularly but would be nice if it could.

The 4050 is about 10% slower than 3060, 250 nits is dim for a laptop like this and MSI isn't the best quality. If you need a cheap gaming laptop this will work but there are better options for only a few dollars more.

Also most of those gen of ultralights use very underpowered versions of the 3050/3050 ti GPUs which makes them not very good for gaming. Power draw had massive impact on performance

Can you provide any general recommendations or ones to look out for? I just want a cheap gaming laptop to play games around the house. Not even the newest games. Looking to spend less than $900 after taxes and would like to keep it closer to $700 but if its a substantial improvement. I would probably being playing older games like runescape and steam games so I don't think I need higher end but I also don't want it to be trash and slow.

Might be worth getting a nice laptop cooler:

The only benefit it has is frame generation, which isn't usable everywhere…and raw performance is still way below the 3070 TI.

These are things that can't be fixed by turning down the lights or closing the shades.
This 4050 is a little slower than a full power 3060, but it's much better than a 3050 Ti.
Plus for games that use frame generation there is a considerable boost.
