If I was advising a younger me looking for a starter set, this is a pretty great deal. Powerstacks are nice and light and will still extract all the available power from the tools, and given how gnarly the 8XX versions of these two are I'd imagine the 7XX are more than adequate for most casual users. Powerstack (pouch) batteries should also have a much longer lifespan than cylinder based packs if the manufacturers are to be believed.

Is the charger universal across all of Dewalt's current battery line?

Edit: I was wrong. As pointed out any Dewalt charger will charge any battery regardless of voltage, but charger type will get in charge time.

Thanks for the correct info!

I had the same thought. Why did they pair the newest batteries with their bottom line drivers?

Seems like they have some sort of price limit for these kits. For example take DCK2051D2 kit, they put latest 8xx series atomic tools but weak batteries. No kits with both modern batteries and modern tools combined. I ended up buying two different kits and mixing them.

Thinking the same thing. Strange combination. Nice middle of road Dewalt and very capable and I have and use them but not something a powerstack is going to help or benefit from size or power. If you really want the batteries for something else I'd wait or sell the drive and impact. I've been waiting for a decent powerstack combo to get for my DCF850.

Sort of.
The standard 20v chargers are universal (powerstack or not) but then they have a 60v product line that obviously a 20v charger doesn't support but I believe the 60v is backwards compatible to charge 20v.
That's actually WRONG. Any DeWalt 20v charger can charge a FlexVolt battery which is 20V/60V. This creates a lot of confusion (along with things like how a 2AH 60V is also a 6AH 20V, simple math but the marketing is very confusing.). When powering a tool, the FlexVolt battery can either provide 20V or 60V by reconfiguring how the internal cells are connected to the output. Similarly when charging it does the same thing, takes the 20v input and recharges all the cells.

So ANY DeWalt 20V charger will charge a 60V battery. But the weaker chargers might take a long time to charge a large battery. The fast chargers usually included in the kits are the fan-cooled (and loud) ones that will fill up a big FlexVolt battery pretty quickly. Though I'm still a believer that a slower charge is actually better (less heat buildup) if you have the time and extra batteries to swap.

Oh that's good to know. I obviously don't have any 60v tools. When I looked at getting one that's what I thought I read. Glad to know I was wrong.

But the reverse is not true, the 60V tools only work with FlexVolt batteries because they can provide 60V. Regular non-FlexVolt 20V batteries, even big ones, can't power a 60V tool.

For $30 more than this deal, the DCF850, DCD709, and 2 power stacks are at Home Depot right now:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/DEWAL.../318434498

Granted - that combo was once $139.... But that was probably a price mistake (that I happened to get in on)

Freaking love that DCF850 - by far my most used driver/drill.

Me too even with regular Dewalt 2amp battery it performs great and light weight. That's a way better deal in my opinion, the 709 is nothing great but good DeWalt drills are cheap. If I didn't already have the 850, I'd be all in and sell the drill bare for $60 on Ebay.

Sell the tools keep the batteries. I don't know you got to do the math. For example sell both tools for $100 then you got the two batteries for a hundred. Is that a good price? I don't know if you can get that maybe you can get even more!
