I can answer some of the questions here as I've had the 3800 for a few months and added Dirac. In my room and setup Dirac was a big improvement over my own post-Audyssey tuning. That said, if you have the time, patience, and interest, there are cheaper ways to get most of the way there. I feel the price of the software and mic was worth it.

I came from a 3500 and liked it a lot. This has a better UI, including a 4K OSD and much better HEOS screen. I don't really get the complaints about the look of the volume meter. It's simple and functional and looks better than the one on my 3500.

I run a 5.1.2 setup in a 16 x 20 room with Focal speakers and an SVS sub, and I have more than enough power to make listening uncomfortable.

Wowsers, $1k for a new non-refurbished 3800? That's what I'm talking about. Maybe by Black Friday this year I can afford it... Congrats to everyone who will be getting it now for this price.

no its about spot on, its a lower mid end model. Hopefully your speakers will be efficient and easy to drive tho. All channels driven your prob going to be like looking at 50-70w per channel all channels driven. So still a good chunk of power but its not going to be gobs if you wanna play really loud in a big room. Plus not to mention its the first of the premium model in the x line to come DIRAC! Its nutty to see this technology come down to such affordable levels not to long ago DIRAC AVRs were like $4000+ exclusive
I'm building out a medium sized bonus room (16x14). Any suggestion on speakers for a 5.1.4 for that size of room?

I'll say this in every thread, the thing that really bothers me is there apparently has been no improvement in the on screen display gui/graphics for things like mute and volume controls. This apparently looks as bad as my 6 year old X4400h.
Additional circuits create more audio/video noise in the system. The simpler the better IMO

Way back when I bought my 3600 for $799 brand new from an online dealer and now this pops up for this incredible price. My 3600 still rocks but the 3800 is the upgrade I have been thinking about.
I don't really think you're going to see much of a difference between the two

Is this overkill for a 5.1.4? I haven't picked the speakers yet, but I'm committed to the 5.1.4 at this point
No but I would recommend buying your speakers 1st, they make the biggest difference.
Another plus is if this is the AVR you want, might be less expensive by then. 👍🏻

Value? How you gonna go back down after hearing the 4800 drive your speakers?! No way jose...
If you use external amps not much difference especially for the price!
This coming from having experience with both of them.

Thanks...I bought it. Now the hunt for speakers.
How about this setup Smilie The JBL's are currently on sale.

L/C/R JBL Studio 590
Surrounds JBL Studio 580
Atmos RSL C34ce

You need an external amp if you're running more than 9 channels.

Has the 4800 ever been on sale?
Yes. I checked a few months back and it was on sale for 2199 but wanted to wait till they fall below 2k. I have the denon 4300 so no rush but waiting to upgrade to Dirac. The 4800 has a different class amp than 3800 and is made in Japan so quality and sound will be better especially with Dirac. I was also eyeing the NAD T778 receiver with the lcd touchscreen and changeable modules but it has been a while since it was released so not worth it until they release an updated model.

I'm using a x3400h with 5.1.2 and it sounds great. Getting this x3800h to bump up to 5.1.4 and HDMI 2.1 x6 inputs. I have Polk LSiM 707's, 706c, and SVS Elevations (plus 2x SVS 3000 Micro subs). Very well matched speakers. Very full sound. Possibly overkill, but I like them.
Wow, it's cool to see someone has the same speakers as myself. I have the 707's, 706c and 703s for the rear, with a emotiva amp and a SVS SB16 ultra. I'm finally changing the denon x3300w for this. Hopefully it's a significant upgrade.

My x3400h died and Denon warranty was terrible. Went with Yamaha after and never looked back.

Surprised no one is comparing the Onkyo RZ50? In my reading it has same or better audio performance and more features... including DIRAC for free instead of extra cost -

Check out some direct to consumer brands like Aperion Audio or Ascend Acoustics. Both have trial periods and pricing ends up being very competitive when they cut out the retailer. I have had some Aperion Verus speakers for about 8 years and love them

I tried onkyo about 12 years ago and wasn't too impressed. Pretty sure the quality is much better now. Do you like the sound of onkyo compared to denon? I like the sound of Denon but it is more neutral and I prefer brighter receivers.
