No atx 3. Is it worth paying extra since this is a totally new build?

I don't have this exact PSU, I have the Toughpower Grand RGB 850W, but it had trouble powering a 3800X + 6950 XT. Random crashes both in game and idle. Took awhile for me to find the source. Swapped to a spare 1000W EVGA PSU and haven't crashed since. The weird problem is it doesn't crash during stress test, where the system draws about 700W from the wall, but it'll crash randomly in game or idle...

No, it's not. The main benefit of ATX 3 power supplies is a much better management of power spikes, which may be required by high end graphic cards. Current NVIDIA 4000 and AMD 7000 series still do not generates so demanding transients and you'll be very well served with a good quality previous generation power supply as this one.
I have this power supply with a AMD 7700x and NVIDIA 4700 ti and everything works flawlessly and with my power load the supply fan cannot be heard

Kinda new it was gonna be this price lol.

Great psu, paid 90 for it last year during prime day. Been powering a 6900XT, 5900X and 5 storage devices (2 HDD, 3 SSD) without issue

You had a faulty unit.

It's important to note that this toughpower gf1 is Tier A which means it's among the best of the best. If you had a toughpower grand rgb that wasn't platinum, it was tier B or lower. Either way, this is a very good PSU and nobody should avoid it. I've been power a 5900X and 6900XT for a year doing gaming (even msfs VR) and video encoding without issue.

I went with an ATX 3.0 certified PSU for my new build (RM850x Shift). You may not need it right now, but you might kick yourself a few years down the road and wish you had gotten one.

Good point. May I ask why you went with 850w if you're future proofing? I bought this but now wondering if I should have gone with 1000w since a 13700k can draw close to 400w when stressed.

Shouldve gotten 1k watts, you might kick yourself a few years down the road and wish you had gotten one thousand watts

Overclocking was my jam back in the days when you could get an additional 800MHz-1GHz out of a chip, but there's just not enough headroom anymore, in my opinion, to justify the time investment, not to mention having to deal with the thermals and additional power draw.

As for video cards, they've gone up in price drastically in recent years and I just don't see myself buying a card that would require more than 850w, at least not in the foreseeable future. I tend to gravitate toward the upper mid-range space.

I see what you did there.

Edit: Pcpartpicker estimates 674w for a 13700k, Z790 board, 32GB of RAM, and a 6800XT.
