My SO got this for our bedroom last year and I ended up getting the a Toshiba variant from Woot in May for my office. Very solid AC performance, but the remote controller works glitchy as hell at times, especially when trying to turn it on/off. The MSmarthome app is really glitchy too with shutting it on and off and scheduling basically works half the time unless you set it up with 24 hour time. Alexa integration is trash if you are not the primary account holder of the unit, but otherwise works. And finally, the temperature reading, from my unscientific tests, reads about 3-4 degrees lower than it really is, so an offset would be necessary if using it with home automation stuff. Agree with everything KevoD said too. I bought camper seal foam tape from Home Depot to augment the sealing (the default adhesive is super messy to remove), and it's worked great so far.

If you can deal with those first-world problems, highly recommended!
Bought this when it was posted last month and have enjoyed it so far. Cools great (temp goes as low as 60 degrees). Only two concessions are that it periodically gets kind of loud for 10-20 seconds during regular operation (without warning) which can be a bit annoying if you're on the phone, and the insulation where the hose attaches to the window bracket could be a little better to reduce exterior noise and air flowing in when the unit is off, but otherwise have no other complaints. I imagine the insulation issue is going to be universal for any portable AC, though.
It generates a lot of heat, that's for sure. It's nothing like a space heater. You can just imagine all of the heat that goes out the hose in A/C mode is reversed into the room. It will warm up a medium-sized room very quickly.

The downsides of the heat function are:

It only works if the temp outside is above 42 degrees. So depending on your climate this may only be useful for chilly spring and autumn days.
It generates a lot of condensate so you have to hook a hose up to the highest drain and empty the bucket every now and then.
When it's cold out, and the unit is not in use but still hooked up to the window, a lot of cold air is going to come in through the duct hose. This can also cause a lot of condensation to build up underneath the unit where the cold air pours out onto the floor. You really have to pull it out of the window and shut the window when it's not in use if it's cold outside.
Make sure you wrap the duct hose with the included sleeve if using heat mode, to prevent condensate from building on the duct hose.

Overall I would say it's good for chilly spring / autumn days where you need a little extra warmth but don't want to turn on the furnace, but not so useful for very cold days like in the dead of winter.

I bought the Hisense 8k BTU portable a/c from Costco when it was 399.99 - $80 = ~$320

The Hisense one has a heatpump too but it doesn't mention inverter... Would this unit be worth the upgrade? I haven't opened the other one yet.

Yeah to be honest, I feel like that was mostly a review of the Toshiba unit which is a carbon copy (I don't know if there are any significant differences) and my unit is refurbished which might add to that. The temps are off according to my ecobee sensors for both units, however. Alexa/Google work, but after they switched to the MSmarthome app, Alexa integration suffered for it (read reviews in the skills page, it's at 1-star still I think)
No differences at all, they're identical except for the Toshiba sticker. I use my Toshiba with the Midea app and it calls itself a Midea.

I actually got the hisense costco deal for 299 last week and I'm considering returning it and buying this one.

Figured I'll share my experience to help out.

The hisense works great it blows cold and managed to get my gaming room down to 73 degrees on full blast mind u this is a small room but I could see it working in the advertised up to 400 Sq ft. It does the job well.

I bought an insulator sleeve for the exhaust and that helped it out more than I expected.

My problem is the lack of inverter. When this thing kicks on and I'm gaming with my pc on the same circuit it was tripping my breaker. I replaced my breaker because I had some other issues with it and it hasn't tripped it again but it's obvious I'm really taxing the circuit and I can't really switch to a different circuit for pc or ac unit unfortunately.

When the compressor kicks on it doesn't trip the breaker anymore but it does trigger my battery backup for a split second I hear it click.

The inverter would Eliminate this entirely for me

This also translates to a much more efficient unit check YouTube for power draw on both and the midea is less than half of the power draw than the hisense at any given moment.

My situation is unique though and tbh if u Wana cool a small room I don't doubt you will be happy with either but if u want to save energy and/or put this on an already taxed circuit def go with inverter option.

edit : also inverter will allow u to run the midea off a generator unlike the hisense.

Do you guys just use it in the daytime and take it off during the night so you can close the window? I want to run it 24/7 at just 81F but....I think the bracket lock for the window isn't safe? intruder can just yank the window and it comes right off with some force, I didn't install that but I put a wooden dowel, but they can also easily push the hose slider in to break it and slide the window down. Any other safety measures that's better so I can leave it 24/7? it's a nice area here but I still like to be safer than just the security bracket.

I tried the remote control and it doesn't work sometimes, it' s not very good.
Iit's kinda loud to me, but cold and it works.
manual linke here, you can install it on horizontal and vertical doors, even those large sliding doors to back yard. https://m.media-amazon.com/images...DDn33S.pdf

Yep, at least for the Toshiba one in my office. I was following the video initially and one comment made me regret my application (and I should've remembered this when I was helping my SO install hers in our bedroom). Since Woot didn't include the extra tapes (and some other missing accessories I didn't need), they shaved $70 off it! I was still left without enough tape, however.

With the camper foam, I kinda went crazy with it and sealed the unit window edges and the hose fixture itself. Basically no gaps and the cooling has been perfect so far. The tape is a little less sticky than the included one, so you'll have to be patient with it, but in turn leaves NO residue. But for a $5ish dollar big roll of foam tape, it's doing a great job! I'm going to do the same for the Midea in our bedroom since we moved and there wasn't much leftover tape included.
So you used it to seal up it further, can I also take off the default tape and replace it with camper foam tape?
Not too familiar with the tape, is it those?

Security is the only thing keeping me from buying this a/c unit. How "easy" is it to take the window unit out when needed? I am in a high crime area, and not taking any chances.

Bugs are the only reason I'm not getting a window unit. There's a ton of everything outside in July.

how are you blocking the rest of the windows when you pump the air outside?

According to this vid it's very easy, but I like to make sure everything is tight and as little opening as possible so outside air won't get in, it WILL take a few min to take on and off each time, I can see it will be a little hassle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mS-N6U1TaI

Try have something outside to block the window so peple don't know you have the a/c, lock that room with a/c from outside, or use it until 9,10pm then close the window. I was thinking about those for my situation.

Love to find a small unit single hose with an inverter anyone seen anything like this, the room is 20 x 20 and gets some AC already, but has low air flow, it cost way to much for them to fix that so a small portable unit would be great.

You don't need to connect a hose unless using dehumidifier mode, in regular A/C mode these units shouldn't generate enough condensation to need manual draining.
Ours in AC mode pulls almost a 5 gallon Sparkletts bottle of water out of the air when we run our AC overnight

Can any owners of this product comment on how good it works as a heater/heat pump?

Thats a lot, what state/city?

Used it for 3 nights now and no message for full yet, but I am in a desert area. Manual and videos I saw say the a/c mode it's rare to have enough condensation to dump out.
